Bank feeds password length not long enough

I reviewed several posts, but I didn't find one that dealt with the current issue I am having.  Due to an issue with a bank, we decided to start using longer more complicated passwords.  The issue that has come up, is that when we now go to use Bank Feeds, the password field only allows for 13 characters and the password is 24 characters.  Is there a fix for this?  If the financial institutions are now allowing for longer passwords, shouldn't QB have updated this?  Using QB 2019 Pro currently.

Bank feeds password length not long enough

Hi there, hvmgr.

For now, there's no option to change the maximum number of password characters when adding a bank in QuickBooks. Check out these articles for complete list of character and list limitations in the program:

If your bank provides a .qbo copy of your banking transactions, you can use it to import them into QuickBooks. Go to the Import Web Connect (.qbo) files section of this article for more details: Set Up Bank Accounts For Bank Feeds In QuickBooks Desktop.

I'd also recommend sending feedback or feature request directly from QuickBooks. Here's how:

  1. Go to the Help menu.
  2. Select Send Feedback Online, then click Product Suggestion.
  3. Enter all required details and click Send Feedback

That would be a great solution, however most of the banks I use only have .QFX as an option for QB, .QIF for Quicken and of course .CSV as options.  I don't think I've ever seen a .QFO as a download option, but I am looking.  Also, great idea on product suggestion.  Didn't even think about it while in the "heat" of the issue.

Bank feeds password length not long enough

After spending an hour with the bank and almost two hours with Intuit, here is what appears to be the problem..

The banks have a <bank>.QBO file that contains the bank's "information" that QB uses.  Where or how to get this file seems to be a magical thing and can't be explained by either the bank or Intuit.  I tested three different banks bank feed logins.  The bank causing the problem only accepts 13 characters through the bank feed login, even though the bank has updated their password format to accept longer passwords for their website.  The other two bank's bank feed logins accepted 33 characters, the same as their maximum password lengths for their website.  So, I believe, that if I could find out how to get the updated/current <bank>.FBO file for the problem bank and import it, the problem wouldn't exist.  However, no one seems to be able to explain how to get the file.

I appreciate the troubleshooting steps that you've done to get this resolved, @hvmgr.

You can automatically or manually update your Financial Institutions Directory (FiDir) in QuickBooks Desktop. This to ensure that you have the latest information from your financial institution.

Before doing so, make sure to back up the company fileupdate QuickBooks Desktop to the latest release. and have the latest supported version of QuickBooks to update each directory.

For the automatic update, here's how:

  1. Go to Banking, select Bank Feeds then Bank Feeds Center.
  2. Select the Refresh account(s) icon or choose Sync all for this bank from the dropdown.

For Manual update.

  1. Locate the fidir.txt file on Windows 10, 8, and 7. 9
  2. Example: Enterprise-C:\ProgramData\Intuit\QuickBooks Enterprise Solutions XXXX\Components\OLB\branding\filist.Pro/Premier- C:\ProgramData\Intuit\QuickBooks XXXX\Components\OLB\branding\filist.
  3. Right-click fidir.txt, then select Rename.
  4. Change .txt to .old, then click outside the field to save the name change.
  5. Select your QuickBooks version to get the latest file.
    1. 2021
    2. 2020
    3. 2019
    4. 2018
  6. On the "Save As" window, select Desktop, then Save.
  7. On the Desktop, right-click the fidir.txt file, then choose Copy.
  8. Right-click the Start button, select File Explorer then This PC. Then open the filist folder from step 1.
  9. Right-click anywhere in the folder, then Paste.
  10. Close and reopen QuickBooks.

Once everything's fine, you'll want to add and categorize your transactions to make sure they're accounted for correctly and prevent any duplicates. Then, you can reconcile your account to ensure the accuracy of your books.

In case you encounter any errors in the future, the following guide contains solutions on how to fix online banking issues: Fix OL and OLSU Bank Feeds errors.

Bank feeds password length not long enough

Hello there, @ jr_vr@hotmail.co. Let me shed some light about password creation in QuickBooks Self-Employed.

The password's length is determined by the number of characters your bank requires. It's recommended to contact their customer service department to find out what password requirements they have.

On the other hand, the password requirements for QuickBooks Self Employed are as follows:

  • Use 8 or more characters.
  • Use upper and lower case letters (e.g. Aa).
  • Use a number (e.g. 1234).
  • Use a symbol (e.g.!@#$).

You can refer to this article to know more about the character limitations for fields in QuickBooks.

We can perform browser troubleshooting If your password is correct.

To perform, here’s how:

  1. Restart your browser.
  2. Use other browser like Incognito.
  3. Clear your browser’s cache and browsing history.

Bank feeds password length not long enough

I am using QuickBooks Desktop Pro Plus 2021. The bank feed 'sync' password field has a limit of 32 characters.

This is important to note because when setting up the bank feeds my 35 character password with BECU was accepted and linked my bank accounts to my QuickBooks Accounts. However, when I went to perform a sync I kept getting an OL-332 error AND an email from BECU informing me the password was incorrect.

I hope this helps anyone who is using longer and more secure passwords for their sensitive online accounts.

Intuit - Please document ALL character limitations not just common fields in your support articles.
