Can I change the beginning balance when reconciling?

Hi there, @michaelkeehn33.

Thank you for posting here in the Community. I'm here to help you fix the problem with the bank account in QuickBooks Online.

Beginning balance issues usually happens when you have an incorrect opening balance. This is the starting point you set when you first created it in the chart of accounts.

I suggest you start by double-checking the information. Please go to your bank register and review the details.

Here's how:

  1. Select the Accounting menu, then select Chart of Accounts.
  2. Find the account on the list.
  3. Press View register.
  4. Search for the opening balance entry. It should have "Opening Balance Equity" in the Account column.
    Review
  5. Take note of the date and balance.

After taking note of the date and amount of the opening balance in QuickBooks, compare it against your bank records.

If the opening balance in QuickBooks doesn't match your bank records, correct it. Please follow these steps:

  1. In QuickBooks, select the opening balance entry to expand the view.
  2. In the Deposit column, edit the balance so it matches your bank records.
    Edit
  3. Select Save.

If it matches your bank records, please review the transactions. Since this is the first time reconciling the account, there should only be one entry that will show as reconciled (the opening balance entry.).

No other transactions should show with the R (reconciled) status. To review the account:

  1. Go to the Accounting menu, then select Chart of Accounts.
  2. Find the account on the list.
  3. Select View register to get more details.
  4. Search for the opening balance entry. It should have "Opening Balance Equity" in the Account column.
  5. Review the checkmark column. There should have an R in the box.
    Check
  6. Check the rest of the transactions on the list. There should be a C or blank box in the checkmark column.
  7. If there's an R on any other transactions, select the transaction to expand the view.
  8. Select the box in the checkmark column. Keep selecting it until the box is blank. Then select Save.
