Can I download bank transactions from a previous period to an existing GL account?

Hi, @JCJ2020.

Yes, you can manually download bank transactions in QuickBooks Online. To prevent duplicate transactions, you'll need to get the date of the opening balance in your bank. I'll show you how:

Step 1: Pick a date range

  1. Go to the Accounting tab.
  2. From the drop-down arrow, choose Chart of Accounts.
  3. Find the bank account that you want to download.
  4. Select View register.
  5. At the bottom, write down the date of the opening balance.

Step 2: Download transactions from your bank

  1. Sign in to your bank website.
  2. Follow the instructions of your bank on how to download transactions to your computer.
  3. Make sure the date for the download is at least one day before your opening balance.
  4. Download your transactions.

After, your bank gives you options on how to download/export your transactions. Choose one to upload the file into QuickBooks Online.

  • Comma-Separated Values (CSV)
  • QuickBooks Online (QBO)
  • Quicken (QFX)

Step 3: Start download for accounts connected to online banking

  1. Go to the Banking tab, then choose Banking.
  2. Select the blue tile for the account you want to download.
  3. Click Update drop-down arrow, choose File upload.

For accounts not connected to online banking:

  1. Go to the Banking tab.
  2. Select Upload transactions.

If you receive an error downloading bank transactions, check this out: Fix bank upload errors in QuickBooks Online.

You can match and categorize your transactions, once it's already in QuickBooks.
