I'm on Quickbooks Online right now (August 2019) and the "delete" option is not appearing when I follow these steps. The closest thing I see is "Make inactive," but I have an account that was incorrectly added, has nearly 4000 transactions in it (so deleting one by one would be a bit of a challenge), and needs to be completely deleted. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated!
I'd be glad to help you today, Kat17.
Keeping your Chart of Accounts organized is my priority. Allow me to help you delete the account and transactions via QuickBooks Online.
You can choose the option to Make Inactive to mark the account as deleted. The reason why QuickBooks Online won't completely delete an account is to ensure that your transactions are intact. Whenever you need the inactive account for your reference in the future, you can simply restore it.
Make an account inactive:
I can see how challenging it is for you to delete the transactions one by one. However, deleting them in bulk isn't an option for us right now so it has to be done manually.
You can get more details in this article: Remove accounts you no longer use.

Hi, is this the same process on quickbooks online? The account I am trying to delete has a zero balance, when I click make inactive it brings up a message "This account has a non-zero balance. Inactivating this account will cause an adjusting transaction to be created. Is this OK?"
Welcome to the Community, clairebarec.
Yes, the outlined steps above is for QuickBooks Online (QBO). If you inactivate an account with transactions, the system will create an adjustment entry to zero out that register’s balance.
This adjustment will show up on your reports, so I suggest reaching out to your accountant first before inactivating your QuickBooks register.

I’m trying to do this but the drop down arrow next to view register does not give me an option to delete. What does that mean? I’m admin and my accountant doesn’t have that option either. The account to delete is a duplicate account that has been disconnected.
Hello there, @Mirapiva.
Let me guide you on how to delete your account in QuickBooks.
You can select the option to Make Inactive to mark the account as deleted. The reason why QuickBooks won't completely delete an account is to ensure that your transactions are intact and accurate.
Deleting the account will not remove the transactions. If you want to remove the transactions associated with this account, you can check out this article for the detailed steps: Remove deleted accounts from reports.

When I go and try to make the bank account active, it states that it is unable to do this because it is still being used for other products and services. How can I find out what 'product and services' are still attached to this bank account?
How are you, sksmith?
You can run the Product/Service List report and add the expense and income account column. To do this, click the small Gear icon and put a check for the Income and Expense account inside the box.
I've added a sample screenshot below:
By this, you'll see where the items are attached to the account. You can visit here to learn how to customize the Product/Service List report.
Let me know if you have further questions about the report. I'll be right here.
Hi I'm having the same problem, however your solution didn't work because when I go into account info there is no option to disconnect this account on save. It is connected to my bank so I cannot delete it in COA. Please advise.
Thanks for looping in, srconnor.
I can help share additional steps in disconnecting your bank so you can delete it on your chart of accounts.
To better isolate the issue, you may want to disconnect the connected bank through the Banking page.

The option to delete an account is unavailable in QuickBooks Online. However, you can make it active, so it will no longer show in the Chart of Accounts.
I'll be glad to show you how:

Similar problem here (empty account, NOT connected to bank) but clicking on "View Register" will not allow me to delete it, just "make inactive"
Making an account inactive will mark it as deleted. There are just a few steps to delete unwanted accounts.
Please be reminded that deleting an account will not remove all its transactions. They will remain in the company file, so you're able to access them through reports.

Will deleting the bank account wipe the slate clean to make one able to start over with fresh entries downloaded from the same bank?
Yes, deleting the bank account, all transactions under the For Review page will be wipe out, Studio26.
If the account has a remaining balance, the system will make adjustments to zero it out. Check this out to learn more about the impact for doing this process: Disconnect or delete an account from the Downloaded Transactions page. This article also provides the steps to delete an account.

On the drop down arrow beside View register, i do not have an option to delete a bank account, only to make it inactive. It's a bank account I accidentally put in, so I don't want it to be inactive, I want it completely gone.
Yes, you're correct, CharlieBrown69 .
In QuickBooks Online, there isn't an option to completely delete an account to keep your record complete. You can only make it inactive.
These are the steps:
I'm just a click away if you need more help.
Not seeing the Disconnect this account on save option means that the account is not connected to the Banking page. You can just directly make them inactive.
Note that you cannot completely delete an account, hence, the available option is Make inactive (reduces usage) only. The associated transactions can still be pull up through certain reports.
Other than that, you can get back to us for more queries.
