Hello and welcome to the Community, Jcheeks.

I'm here to lend a hand with the Error 194 in QuickBooks Desktop.

This error usually occurs when there's a problem with the company file data. We can run the QuickBooks file doctor app to repair the company file.

I'm adding the article below for you to download the app and fix the issue: QuickBooks File Doctor - Fix your Damaged Company File or Network.

Re: error code 196

I do not have trouble opening the file.  When I backup QB states there is an error.  The error code is 194.  When I search 194, 196 comes up.

Hi there, @Jcheeks.

I appreciate the clarification you've given. Allow me to step into this conversation and help share some more steps to get past the error 194 that you received.

As mentioned by my peer AlcaeusF above, error 194 occurs when there are some issues with your QuickBooks company file data. To get this sorted out, we can try repairing your QuickBooks which can help fix data-related issues.

Let me guide you how:

  1. Restart your computer to close unnecessary programs interfering with QuickBooks.
  2. Create a backup for your company file.
  3. Select Start and then Control Panel.
  4. Select Programs and Features. If necessary, choose Uninstall a program.
  5. Select QuickBooks in the list of programs and choose Uninstall/Change.
  6. Select Continue, then Next.
  7. Select Repair then Next. Wait for the Repair to complete.
  8. Choose Finish. Restart your computer if prompted.

Once done, make sure that your QuickBooks is updated to the latest release

To learn more about this process, please check out this article: Fix QuickBooks Desktop.

If the issue persists after trying these steps, you can also try running the reboot.bat process that can help fix file issues for QuickBooks.

Here's an article that will guide you with the entire procedure: Run Reboot.bat.

That should do it!

Re: error code 196

After upgrading from QB2016 to QB2019, I was getting ....

Error: Verify Online Account Information: Invalid bank routing number --> Record = 53.
