Hello ednabanatao722, Let me help you delete a bank accou...

Hello ednabanatao722,

Let me help you delete a bank account.

It sounds like the account you are deleting is connected to the online banking feature. You may need to disconnect the bank connection before deleting the account. Keep in mind that you can restore a deleted account, but may need to make corrections to journal entries and balances. If you're unsure, check with your accounting professional before deleting an account.

To disconnect an account:

  1. In the navigation bar, click Banking, and then select the Banking sub-tab.
  2. Select the account you want to delete, and then click its Edit icon, then Edit account info.
  3. In the Account window, select Disconnect this account on save.
  4. Click on Save and Close.

The account stays in QuickBooks, but isn't automatically updated with downloaded transactions.

To delete an account: (Be sure you understand the effects if you fully delete an account.)

  1. Click the Gear icon, and then click on Chart of Accounts.
  2. Select the account you want to delete in the list.
  3. Click on the drop-down arrow beside View register and select Delete.
  4. Confirm that you want to delete the account.

That’ll do it. Please let me know if I can assist you further. I’d be pleased to help.

I'm having a similar problem. I put in the wrong account, and when I try to delete it I get a warning that an adjusting transaction must be made. The only information that is there is the starting balance. What adjusting transaction will be made? It just needs to be deleted completely, like it was never there. So what needs to be adjusted?

Re: I'm having a similar problem. I put in the wrong account,...

You cannot even have any transaction within the register, including a starting balance. Delete that starting balance and if there is ZERO transactions then you can delete it.

I deleted a bank account from the Chart of accts. And then I tried to delete another account which is of type Other Current Asset, however, the system doesn't let me delete this account saying that it linked to the Online Banking feature. This feature was enabled in the bank account that was successfully deleted.
Can I still delete this account?, I tried to delete the single transaction that was recorded in it and it won't let me

Re: I'm having a similar problem. I put in the wrong account,...

You can delete the account, EBFinancials.

First, you'll have disconnect it since it's linked to the online banking feature. You can follow my colleague @MarninaM's steps on how to do it.

Then, you can now delete it. Here's how:

  1. Click Accounting, then go to Chart of Accounts.
  2. Look for the account.
  3. Click the View register drop-down arrow, then choose Delete.
  4. You'll receive a message, "Are you sure you want to delete this?", click Yes.

I'm joining this thread to provide additional information, mizbrown2u.

Please choose the Make Inactive option instead. The steps given in the previous replies were posted prior to the updates made in the Chart of Accounts.

Also, deleted accounts in the Chart of Accounts will become inactive accounts and will not be completely removed. Here's the updated guide article for more details: How to delete a bank account in Chart of Accounts

Re: Hello ednabanatao722, Let me help you delete a bank accou...

Why does Quickbooks forbid users from completely deleting a bank account?  We have several bank accounts which were created in error.  We went ahead and  designated them as "inactive,. But they all still show up on our reports.  Why?

Re: Hello ednabanatao722, Let me help you delete a bank accou...

I'm here to explain to you this behavior in QuickBooks Online, mike2019.

The reason why QBO won't completely delete an account is to ensure that your transactions are intact. Whenever you need the inactive account for your reference in the future, you can simply restore it.

If the inactive accounts contain transactions, they will still remain in your company data including your reports. I've got you an article for more details about how QBO handles the deleted accounts.

You can actually keep the deleted accounts from showing on your reports. To temporarily remove them from any report, just follow these steps:

  1. Open the report where the deleted account is showing.
  2. Click the Customize button in the upper right-hand corner.
  3. Maximize the Rows/Columns section, and then click the drop-down for Show non-zero or active only rows.
  4. Select Active or Non-zero.
  5. Click Run Report.

If you prefer to completely remove them, you'd have to make the account active again, and then merge it with a similar account. Here's an article for the detailed steps: Remove deleted accounts from reports.

Stay in touch if there's anything else you need. I'll be around to help you further.

Re: Hello ednabanatao722, Let me help you delete a bank accou...

You've got me. I'm here to help you disconnect your bank account, Dbradley.

I've checked our file and there are no reported cases same as yours. The Disconnect this account on save box should be available.

In your case, this can be a browser issue. Let's isolate it by opening QuickBooks Online using a private browser. From there, try to check if the box to disconnect is available. If it is, go back to your main browser and clear the cache. This will fix browser issues and help the system run better on your computer.

Moreover, using a different browser fixes issues like this (Google Chrome, Internet Explorer, or Mozilla Firefox)

Then, follow JenoP's steps on how to disconnect and inactivate the bank account.

We're just here if you need more help. Just leave a comment below.

Hi,

I have the same issue and I am trying to hide them from my report following your advises however they are still visible. there is just the mention (deleted) next to the account as they are not active anymore but they are still visible on my balance sheet.

is there a reason why?

Thanks

Re: Hello ednabanatao722, Let me help you delete a bank accou...

Good day, Régis.

The filter feature controls all transactions or information that will show on the report. It's possible that report is filtered to show all accounts (active, deleted, and zero). Let's change it to show active accounts only. Here's how:

  1. Open the Balance Sheet report.
  2. Click the drop-down arrow under Show non-zero or active only.
  3. Under Show rows and Show columns, choose Active.
  4. Click Run report.

Refer to my screenshots below.

Hi

First of all thanks a lot but it is still not working

I guess I know why. This account as got a value and I guess this is why it is still visible. However I have replaced already this initial loan account with a simple deposit based on the same value . Shall I just merge them together ?

Thanks

Re: Hello ednabanatao722, Let me help you delete a bank accou...

Hello, rurweide.

Yes. You’re right, merging accounts is one way of removing a deleted account information from the report. You can do it by changing the name of the other account to perfectly match to the other.

For more information about merging accounts, please refer to this article: https://quickbooks.intuit.com/community/Income-and-expenses/How-to-merge-accounts-customers-and-vend...

Re: Hello ednabanatao722, Let me help you delete a bank accou...

Thanks for coming back to the Community, rurweide.

I'm here to help merge two bank accounts in QuickBooks Online.

If the test account doesn't have any transactions in it, merging accounts won't affect your accounting. Follow the steps I've laid out below:

  1. Go to Accounting on the left, then choose Chart of Accounts.
  2. Locate the account you want to keep and select Edit from the drop-down in the Action column.
  3. Take note of the Name and Detail Type, and check if the Is subaccount option is marked. If it is marked, remember the parent account associated.
  4. Select Cancel to return to the Chart of Accounts.
  5. Go to the account which you don't want to use, and select Edit from the drop-down in the Action column.
  6. Change the Name and Detail Type.
  7. Select Save, then choose Yes to confirm that you want to merge the two accounts.

If you opt to contact a live representative, here's how to reach them:

  1. Select the Help icon in the upper right of the screen.
  2. Choose Contact us on the pop-up.
  3. Enter a topic in the How can we help? field (ex. support) and choose Continue
  4. Click Get our phone number.
  5. Enter your contact information.
  6. Click Call me.

That should get you back in line. Please keep me posted and mention me if there is anything else you need about QuickBooks. I'd be happy to help. Have a lovely day!

Re: How to delete old account

Hello,

I'm trying what you suggested but when I click the arrow next to "View Register" I only get the options to "Edit," "Make Inactive," and "Run Report." There is no "Delete" option. I have not connected my bank account to this account so that is not part of the problem. What can I do to delete this account since it was imported by accident when I switched from QuickBooks Desktop to QuickBooks Online?

Thank you!

QuickBooks Team

Re: How to delete old account

Hello there, Maximz.

You can select the Make Inactive option. As what SophiaAnnL mentioned, QuickBooks won't permanently delete an account to make sure that all your transactions are intact and accurate.

We'll be right here if you need more assistance about QuickBooks.
