The reference you've included in this post should allow you to change the transaction number while creating invoices. Saying it doesn't work, can you describe how it does not work? A screenshot would be helpful as well.

OM Gosh, I think I fixed it. I was wiping out the entire Invoice # field when I needed to input just the number and now all is well.
