How can I reset or change transaction umbers?

My invoice numbers are now pre-populating with text that I don't want. I just want to revert them to sequential numbering system only. The reference you've included in this post should allow you to change the transaction number while creating invoices. Saying it doesn't work, can you describe how it does not work? A screenshot would be helpful as well.

OM Gosh, I think I fixed it. I was wiping out the entire Invoice # field when I needed to input just the number and now all is well.
