How do I open up a bank reconcilation that has been finalized?

Hello there, toni25.

I'll walk you through different processes to ensure that your bank reconciliation in QuickBooks goes well.

If you're referring to starting a reconciliation after checking each entry on the bank statement to the ones in QuickBooks and finding that everything matches, you can go to the Reconcile section to begin the process.

Here's how:

  1. Click the Gear icon at left panel.
  2. Choose Reconcile and select Get started.
  3. From the Account dropdown list, select the account you want to reconcile. Make sure it's the same one on your statement.
  4. Review the Beginning balance. Ensure the beginning balance in QuickBooks matches the one on your statement. Here's what to do if they don't match.
  5. Enter the Ending balance and Ending date on your statement. Some banks call the ending balance a "new balance" or a "closing balance."
  6. If you see it, review the Last statement ending date. This is the end date of your last reconciliation. Your current bank statement should start the day after.
  7. Click Start reconciling.

If you mean to open a previously reconciled bank reconciliation, the ability to do so directly is currently unavailable. However, you can unreconcile the transactions so that you can go over them again and reconcile them as needed. If you’re using QuickBooks Online Accountant, use the Undo a reconciliation feature to unreconcile previous transactions without manually editing individual entries from within the register. To visually guide you through the steps, click on this link: Undo a reconciliation. However, if you’re using a different version, you need to manually unreconcile each transaction to complete the process. Before doing so, you can consult an accountant to further assist you and make sure your bank statement is in shipshape.
