I had to adjust the opening balance of a credit card so I can start reconciling. I created a journal entry. I credited the bank account and debited "Retained earnings"??

Would retained earning be the correct category? or what category should I pick?

It's nice to have you here, MohamedRashid.

You don't have to create a journal entry to correct the opening balance. You'll want to edit through the View register link for this account. Let me walk you through the steps:

  1. Click the Gear icon, then select Chart of Accounts.
  2. Locate the account, then go to the Action column and select View register.
  3. Find the opening balance entry. If you've got the Date column sorted from newest to oldest, the opening balance entry may be at the end of the list.
  4. Select the opening balance entry.
  5. Edit the amount. Tip: If you're not able to edit the amount directly on this screen, in some cases you can edit by selecting the Edit ✎ icon.
  6. Click Save. Your change will not be saved if you navigate away from the register without saving.

You can edit an opening balance to reconcile an account: How to enter an opening balance for an existing account.

Hi, I created a credit  card account without entering an opening balance 6 months ago. I am now trying to reconcile and the beginning balance says $0.00 but their should be a balance.  in the "view register" there is no opening balance to edit. when I try to "edit" the account its just giving me the current balance (which is wrong because there is no opening balance). there is no way for me to enter one in the EDIT accout section.  What do I do??

I got you covered, @herbsttheresa.

When you create a new account in QuickBooks, you pick a day to start tracking transactions and enter the balance for your real-life account for that day.

If you forgot to enter an opening balance, you need to create a journal entry to record it. Then, write down the date and amount of the oldest transaction in the account.

You can follow the steps below to create a journal entry:

  1. In your QuickBooks Online account, select + New and choose the Journal entry.
  2. Enter a date that comes before the oldest transaction in the account. This will be the opening balance date.
  3. On the first line from the Account dropdown, select the account you want to enter the opening balance for.
  4. Add a note in the Description field so you know what the journal entry is for.
  5. On the second line from the Account dropdown, select Opening Balance Equity.
  6. Use your bank statements to enter the opening balance. Enter the balance of your real-life account for the date you picked as the opening balance.
  7. Enter the debits and credits based on the type of account you entered on the first line.
  8.  When you're ready, select Save.

Once done, mark the journal entry as reconciled. This prevents it from showing up on a future reconciliation.

 Here’s how:

  1. Go to the Accounting menu and select Chart of Accounts.
  2. Find the account and select Account history from the Action column.
  3. Search for the journal entry you just created. Then, select it to expand the view.
  4. Select the box in the tick column until you see an R. This reconciles the journal entry.
  5. When you're done, click Save.

If your accounts still aren't balanced, here’s a link to know how to fix opening balance issues. I also recommend getting in touch with your accountant if you have further questions. They know how to handle this kind of situation.

SO, in the journal entry I should have 2 lines entered? the first line will be the credit card and a description. and the second line will be opening balance equity? Do i put an amount in the 1st line? or just the second?

or is one a credit and on is a debit?

I'm here to help you with creating a journal entry, Herbsttheresa.

The entry you'll be recording has two lines. The first line is the credit card account you want to enter the opening balance for. Then, the second one is the Opening Balance Equity. You'll have to use your bank statement to ensure you'll enter the correct balance. Also, enter the amount in the Debit column on the first line and the same amount in the Credit column on the second line.
