I have a ton of past imported records with "Check" as the type, but I'd like them to be "Expense". Does it matter & can I change it? If so, how?

Check and Expense transactions are both expenses and records payments simultaneously. If these are both money out transactions, then it doesn't matter if you change its description or not. 

 

You have the option to change the description by importing these transactions manually into QuickBooks Online using a WebConnect file.

 

You can download the last 90 days of transactions using this feature. Here's an article with detailed information about the WebConnect feature: Manually upload transactions into QuickBooks Online.

 

QuickBooks only accepts the transactions provided by your bank. Since these transactions are importing as a check instead of an expense, I'd suggest getting in touch with your financial institution to check on how they send your data to QuickBooks.
