I have one American Express credit card account with 3 cards. I get one statement from Am Ex. Why won't QBO let me connect the three cards to one account in QBO?

I have one American Express credit card account with 3 cards. I get one statement from Am Ex. Why won't QBO let me connect the three cards to one account in QBO? It may have been that I connected one of the cards first that was not the main account. I tried deleting all sub-accounts and linking only the main account to the QBO American Express account. We'll see what happens.

Thanks for reaching out to us here in the Community, eric-fitts.

In QBO, we’re unable to sync a parent account and its subaccounts. If you link both, you’ll get a message that the account is already connected.

Before connecting to Online Banking, you’ll have to check how Amex sends the downloaded transactions. If it transfers to only one account, connect the main one.

Create the sub-accounts if they download to the individual cards. Once you have the details handy, go back to your company and continue setting up the credit cards.

However, if you've already deleted them, go back to the Chart of Accounts page to recreate the credit card accounts. Here's how:

  1. Go to the Accounting menu to select Chart of Accounts.
  2. Click the New button located in the upper right to view the Account window.
  3. Once it opens, choose Credit Card as the Account and Detail Types.
  4. Input the account information by going to the Name field.
  5. Fill in the remaining field boxes and hit Save and Close.

For the sub-accounts:

  1. Follow steps 1 and 2 above.
  2. When the Account window opens, choose Credit Card as the Account and Detail Types.
  3. Type in the sub-account information in the Name field.
  4. Mark the box for Is sub-account and click the drop-down to choose the main one.
  5. Click Save and Close.

To give an overview of setting up a bank and credit card subaccounts, please see this article: Set up a bank and credit card accounts.

Next, connect the credit card to your company. I'm also adding a video for visual reference.

The following steps can help link your Amex account smoothly.
