Importing / automating transaction review based on custom tag fields in CSV/XLS/QBO

Hello,

I have been attempting to import credit card transaction data into Quickbooks
Online which includes custom fields from the bank. These fields contain data
which can be used to automate the setting of values for Vendor, Category,
Customer, and Class, thus eliminating the need for manual review of thousands
of transactions.

I falsely assumed that QB Online would simply allow those fields to be imported
as mapped CSV fields, but that is surprisingly not the case. I then thought about

creating a QBO file to import, expecting that it may support fields inaccessible via

CSV, but was unable to find any file specification explaining the OFXSGML tags

which correspond to the relevant fields in QuickBooks Online. No online examples

or tutorials I could find demonstrated importing fields for credit card transactions.

I have also explored the features of a couple of third-party import utilities
(ProperSoft CSV2QBO and Zed Axis), but neither of them seemed to provide the
required fields either.

There are also "rules" in Quickbooks Online that allow those elusive fields to be
set based on the contents of other fields, but there are only three available to be
inspected for that purpose ("Description", "Bank Text", and "Amount"), none of which
are very useful (unless I'm willing to mangle the transaction descriptions).

Is this really only possible though the SDK? Or perhaps not even then?

Or by programming a headless browser to simulate user clicks based on tag field
contents?

It seems that the only option is to import Vendor, Category, Customer, and Class fields
through a QBO, or perhaps another field which can be referenced by a rule other than
Description, Bank Text, or Amount. If this is possible, is there a reference document
somewhere that details the structure and keywords of a QBO file?

I am also willing to do this in the desktop version if necessary.

Any guidance is appreciated!

Utilize another importer tool.

You may explore to use the "PrivateNote" and/or "LineDescription" field. The template should be like this

RefNumberCreditCardPayeeTxnDateLocationAddressLine1AddressLine2AddressLine3AddressLine4AddressCityAddressStateAddressPostalCodeAddressCountryPrivateNoteCurrencyExchangeRateExpenseAccountExpenseDescExpenseAmountExpenseBillableStatusExpenseBillableEntityExpenseClassLineItemLineDescLineQtyLineUnitPriceLineAmountLineBillableStatusLineBillableEntityLineClass

Importing / automating transaction review based on custom tag fields in CSV/XLS/QBO

Hello there, Kelmo.

At this time, you can use the QuickBooks Online bank rule feature to automatically categorize your downloaded banking transactions.

I want to make sure this idea gets to our team of developers team so they may consider adding the option to our future product updates. This way, they'll be able to identify what product features/options your business need the most.

In the meantime, I encourage you to visit our QuickBooks Blog to be updated with the recent developments made in QBO.

Feel free to reach back to me for any questions. I'm here to provide further assistance at any time. Have a good one.
