Is it possible to make a bank account inactive in Quickbooks so it no longer appears in the Banking Section? This bank was previously active so it might affect accts?

If I make this bank account inactive, what impact will it have on the other transactions in the books connected to this bank? What will happen of the "void" that is left by the deleted bank?

Hi there, guererojpa.

Yes, you can make a bank account inactive in Quickbooks so it'll no longer appear in the Banking Section. Doing so can also affect other transactions connected to this account including balances.

Once an account has a balance and you make it inactive, QuickBooks creates a journal entry. This moves the remaining balance to another account so it doesn't disappear from your books. This shows the remaining balance has been moved to another account, so it doesn't vanish from your books. Your existing transactions in the account don't disappear and stay on your financial reports. That being said, the voided that is left by the deleted bank will still remain.

Please note that before you inactivating the account, I suggest consulting your accountant for further assistance with the process by inactivating the account to ensure your books are accurate.

When you're ready to make an account inactive, please follow the steps below:

  1. Click the Gear icon at the upper right corner. Then, select Chart of Accounts.
  2. Find the account you want to delete/Inactive.
  3. Select the Action drop-down and choose Make inactive.

Once done, this hides the account from menus and your chart of accounts.

If you want to see your inactive accounts in COA, here's how:

  1. Select the Gear icon and then, Chart of accounts.
  2. Choose the Gear icon at the top of the list.
  3. Select the Include inactive checkbox.
