Is my "bank balance" column in QBO supposed to show as a negative value for my credit card account?

I connected my Discover credit card account to QBO, originally there was a $0 balance on the card so it was no big deal. When I used the card to purchase some inventory ($100 for example), I recorded the purchase as an expense with the Credit Card as the payment method.

Now in the chart of accounts, the "Quickbooks Balance" is 100, but the "Bank Balance" is -100. Is it supposed to work this way? My inventory asset account updated correctly so I assume this is all normal. I guess I'm just confused about the negative balance... I haven't seen that before.

Thanks!

You just came into the right place for help, wtsavage.

The bank balance is your bank's actual balance from the last bank feed update. The QuickBooks balance is the total balance of all bank transactions that you’ve added or matched to QuickBooks. Below are a list of possible reasons why these balances don’t match:

  • Outstanding transactions.
  • New transactions for a connected account.
  • Duplicate transactions.
  • Edited or deleted transactions.
  • Card (liability) account.

In your case, since the Bank balance is showing negative, you'll want to do a manual update of your bank account to refresh the connection for the new updates to reflect.

Here's how:

  1. Go to the Banking tab.
  2. Select the bank account and click Update.
  3. If prompted, enter your Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) credentials and select Continue update.

Depending on the factor that’s mentioned above, there are different steps to fix your issue. Here’s an article on the steps to fix or adjust these factors: How to Fix Differences Between QuickBooks Balance and Bank Balance.
