There are lots of possible reasons why this error happens. Here are the following:
- The invoice is already partially paid of fully paid in QuickBooks.
- The invoice you're attempting to modify is on or before the closing date.
- A damaged payment method in QuickBooks
- A damaged "Check" payment method in QuickBooks
- Account Receivable issues
