Owners Investment

Good morning,

I have an owners investment account that i deposited cash into my business account along with a payment for an invoice. When i download bank transactions to make a match I can't figure out how to enter the split for the owners investment? How should the owners investment be entered so it shows up to match transactions?

Owners Investment

Good day, @earthmover.

I got you covered with matching your bank transactions in QuickBooks Online.

You'll need to create an equity account in the system that will cater to your transactions for owner's investments. After that, you can record the deposit that you made so you can split the transaction with the payment then match them afterward.

Let's start with setting up an equity account:

  1. Go to Settings ⚙, then select Chart of Accounts.
  2. Press on New.
  3. From the Account Type ▼ drop-down, select Equity.
  4. From the Detail Type ▼ drop-down, select Owner's Equity or Partner's Equity depending on your situation.
  5. Enter the Name.
  6. Click on Save and Close

Once done, you can now record the deposit that you made for the owner's investment. This way, you can match them to your bank transactions.

To do that:

  1. Press on + New.
  2. Select Bank deposit
  3. From the Account ▼ drop-down menu, select the bank account you're depositing the money into.
  4. In the Add funds to this deposit section, enter the name of the investor in the Received from field.
  5. Select the appropriate equity account from the drop-down list in the Account field.
  6. Select Save and close

For more details about this process, please see this link: Learn how to record capital investments to track money going into your business.

After that, you can now start matching your bank transactions in the system. You can always utilize this reference to guide you with the procedure: Categorize and match online bank transactions in QuickBooks Online.

On the other hand, know that if you want to split one payment to multiple transactions in QBO, you can always follow these steps:

  1. From QuickBooks Online, navigate to the Banking tab and the For Review section.
  2. Click the transaction you need to assign multiple Payees and select Split.
  3. For each part of the split, enter a Category, a Payee, and the Amount. Click Save and add once finished.
