Join nowToday I downloaded my financial information from two separate banks in the Quickbooks webconnect for Quickbooks 2012 and later and got .qbo files. When I tried to open them they defaulted to open with textedit. I tried to "open with" and Quickbooks 2015 was not a recommended application (Quickbooks 2012 was). I clicked on show all and tried to open with Quickbooks 2015 and then quickbooks said it could not open the file because it was in "Open Financial Exchange Format" even though it was a .qbo file. I even tried opening a file i downloaded last week and again got the error message. I upgraded to 2015 because Intuit said I had - earlier versions would not be supported and downloading would be a problem. Now it seems I never should have upgraded from the 2012 version because that looks like it's the only version that may open these .qbo files. I am getting very frustrated especially since the help line doesn;t open until NOON EST.

Don't double click the files after you download and save them. Instead, open them from within QuickBooks. If the mac version is like the windows version, do this by importing a "Web Connect" file from the File | Utilities | Import menu.

I'm having a problem, because (1) we use multiple years of QuickBooks Desktop and (2) the banks have stopped working with Bank feeds (Wells Fargo, US Bank to name a few). Since we downloaded version 2019; it usurps all the .QBO files so that you cannot double click on them anymore with the correct file open.
You must download the .QBO file you want separately and choose save (NOT OPEN). Then you go to the QB version and client file you want the .QBO file to import to and choose File > Utilities > Import > Web Connect files and then choose the .QBO file you want to import. This is for the PC version, not MAC.
I checked around and cannot find the setting in QB 2019 to stop usurping the .QBO files. It would be nice if someone posted how to turn that off.
Good to see you in the thread, shortib.
It's my priority to get you pointed in the right direction and get this matter straightened out right away.
Referencing BRC's great response, you would want to open the file from within QuickBooks. Generally, a .QBO file is meant to be imported to QuickBooks to download your bank transactions. I know you already know the process, but let me include our detailed guide on how to import web connect (.qbo) files, just in case.
I can see how having the option to set a default QuickBooks version to open the file, so I'm sending a feature request up to our Product Development Team for review. They're constantly looking for ideas from users, like yourself, when deciding how to enhance QuickBooks Online.
Please let me know if there's anything else I can do to be of assistance. I'm always here to provide help and answer any questions that you may have. Thanks for dropping in, wishing you and your business only the best.
