QBO Cannot Download AmEx Transactions

Two Issues:

1) Amex transaction downloads fail approximately 50% of the time. Error (105) Bank Connection Down. Sometimes downloads become successful after an hour, sometimes the next day, and sometimes after more than a week. When QBO reports Connection Down, I can always log directly into Amex. I have tried different browsers, incognito mode, a desktop and a laptop (connected cellular), with the same failed results.

2) I have a second Amex credit card linked to the primary credit card. Transactions from the second credit card stopped downloading approximately three years ago after a QBO update. Those downloads have stopped working permanently.

As best I can remember I have opened at least three time consuming cases with QBO, but nothing has ever been resolved. Intuit should be able to verify the number of cases. I happen to have the same two linked credit card setup with Chase Visa and the transactions download properly. Only Amex is a continuing problem.

The only reasonable conclusion in all of this is that Intuit is an arrogant company, perhaps incompetent but I do not think so, whose primary focus is to take your money. This should all be fixable, and it should not take three years and multiple cases. Then again, perhaps QBO engineering is incompetent. Intuit does not need my business and eventually I will have the time to move my business to a different online accounting software package. To the QBO competition reading this, make it easy for us to migrate at a reasonable price, and you may very well enjoy many new customers.

QBO Cannot Download AmEx Transactions

Good evening, @adrask1n

Thanks for reaching out to the Community for support. I appreciate the details of your issue. I'm happy to lend a hand in resolving your banking error 105.

Typically when we see error 105 in QuickBooks Online, it's affiliated with the user's actual bank. Sometimes their website may be undergoing maintenance or have server issues. This can stop the online bank connection to QuickBooks. I've included some steps to use when you see error 105.

First, you can update your online banking manually. To do this:

  1. Sign in to QuickBooks Online.
  2. Go to the Banking menu or Transactions menu.
  3. Click Update.

The second solution would be to check that your bank's website is working correctly on their end. Such as signing into the bank website, look for any messages or notifications that something isn't working, review your account page and history of transactions. If everything checks out ok, manually update the account in QuickBooks again. If you continue to have issues, I recommend contacting our technical support team to take a further look into the error.

For additional details, check out Fix bank error 102 and 105

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. I'll be here every step of the way. As always, feel free to reach out to the Community at any time. Take care!

QBO Cannot Download AmEx Transactions

Tori,

Please call American Express and ask them two questions:

1) Are there currently any problems with your website?

2) Do you have any responsibility for Intuit/QBO inability to download transactions?

The answer to both questions is "No".

I have a long history of cases you can look back on with QBO. In each case QBO blamed the bank website. The problem and resolve for each case has always been QBO.

I have tried with different browsers, incognito mode, and a different computer connected via cellular. Same result. Without making any changes on my end, it will eventually connect usually within two weeks. I just tried now to download from Amex and it worked. Yesterday no good, today okay. However my second Amex card linked to the same account has not downloaded since approx three years ago after a QBO update went in.

QBO Cannot Download AmEx Transactions

Tori,

Another thought. My bank and credit card accounts are connected with each other on the back end, having nothing to do with QBO, so that I may move funds between them. That may be the source of the problem on the QBO side with Amex. In a previous case I had with failed downloads it took me about 40 man hours to diagnose and replicate the problem on demand. A funds transfer between two banks was downloading incorrectly because the transactions were actually linked between the two banks. QBO insisted that both bank websites were at fault. After I replicated the problem QBO ultimately fixed it. In typical Intuit arrogance, my monthly QBO subscription fee was increased while I was troubleshooting and doing most everything manually. I am a small company of just two people. I would love to eat my slice of "Humble Pie" and apologize to Intuit. I have never had a technical problem that wasn't on the QBO side.

Fiat Lux,

In this world of ransomware and other substantial cyber security threats I do not click on links and install software, especially "Trial License" versions. I believe it was about 18 months ago that the Intuit data center was hacked and hit with ransomware. I will do some homework on moneythumb. Thanks for the tip.

@adrask1n

Any reference? Not aware of those news. Hacked and ransomware are two different things.

Networks are compromised, hacked, and ransomware installed. In this thread it is semantics. I would prefer to discuss Intuit fixing bugs to download Amex transactions instead of telling customers it is the banks fault.

QuickBooks Cloud Hosting Firm iNSYNQ.com Hit in Ransomware Attack

Cloud hosting provider iNSYNQ.com says it is trying to recover from a ransomware attack that shut down its network and has left customers unable to access their accounting data for the past three days. Unfortunately for iNSYNQ.com, the company appears to be turning a deaf ear to the increasingly anxious cries from its users for more information about the incident.

A message from iNSYNQ to customers.

Gig Harbor, Wash.-based iNSYNQ specializes in providing cloud-based QuickBooks accounting software and services. In a statement posted to its status page, iNSYNQ said it experienced a ransomware attack on July 16, and took its network offline in a bid to contain the spread of the malware.

“The attack impacted data belonging to certain iNSYNQ clients, rendering such data inaccessible,” the company said. “As soon as iNSYNQ discovered the attack, iNSYNQ took steps to contain it. This included turning off some servers in the iNSYNQ environment.”

iNSYNQ said it has engaged outside cybersecurity assistance and to determine whether any customer data was accessed without authorization, but that so far it has no estimate for when those files might be available again to customers.

Meanwhile, iNSYNQ’s customers — many of them accountants who manage financial data for a number of their own clients — have taken to Twitter to vent their frustration over a lack of updates since that initial message to users.

QBO Cannot Download AmEx Transactions

What a relief. I thought I missed something big months ago 8)

InSynQ is one of their Authorized Commercial Hosting Providers. QB Desktop users may run the app on the cloud.

I won't be surprised if there is another hosting provider hit the same thing in the future. Afaik, Intuit put their QB Online platform on Amazon Web Service.

QBO Cannot Download AmEx Transactions

I am having the same problem the original poster described - some days the connection to AMEX works and some days it doesn't. I end up with incomplete data that I have to manually add when I reconcile the account.

What is most infuriating about your response is that it appears you didn't even bother to read the original post. The problem is between Quickbooks Online and the American Express website.  What "actual bank" are you referring to?  They mentioned having logged into the AMEX site to verify everything was working, so why would your suggested solution be to do what has already been tried? The OP also mentions having contacted the QBO support team multiple times without benefit.  Why would they expect reaching out again would make any difference?

I've seen repeatedly on this site where QBO employees offer canned responses that offer no real solutions and recommend contacting the technical team.  It is obvious that Intuit has little respect for the intelligence of its customers and doesn't take feedback seriously.

I have had issues with Amex download for 3 weeks now on 2 clients.  I've called numerous times.  They truly don't care.  I'm looking for another service.

To change to different accounting software and not lose your transactional history I believe you first have to revert to QB Desktop. Then the backup file from QB Desktop can be imported directly into Sage, Freshbooks, Xero, Zoho, etc with all of your history.
