When you describe Lightning bolt, asterisk and checkmark, that isn't in Banking Feeds; that is in the Register view, in the QB file. These are Entries that Exist. Not Bank Feeds. Let's understand how to Use that status:
"Trying to find solution to original post I discovered that many transactions in my bank ledger do in fact have the lightning bolt. I don't understand this."
That means "pre-reconciled" or Confirmed by using Banking Feed. When you next reconcile, hit the Matched button. There is then a pop up for "statement end date" so that it will use only those Lightning Bolts that fall on the Statement you are using. Now they are Checkmarks. All Done at once, for you.

QB supports your Card Provider, if your Card Provider supports QB. You don't need More tools, such as Mint.

Edit that Bank account; someone enabled Online Banking.
"Typically when I go to the electronic bank account i tell it that i only want to download the statement but the last time I think i mistakenly let it download a greater number of days."

You have the option to manually update your QuickBooks Desktop so you can get back on track in matching your transactions.
First off, some errors in your QuickBooks can be caused by the current version you're using. Thus, updating it to the latest release fix some bugs and issues you have encountered.
