How to undo bank reconciliation

Hello mmmmm,

The Undo option for a reconciled period is only available in QuickBooks Online Accountant. I'd recommend inviting your accountant to your company, and let them undo the reconciliation period at once.

  1. Click the Gear icon in the upper-right corner, and select Manage Users.
  2. Go to the Accounting firms tab, and click the Invite button.
  3. Enter the accountant's information.
  4. Click Save.
  5. Let your accountant undo the entire reconciliation.

Otherwise, you'll need to undo the reconciled transactions one at a time. You can use this article for reference: How to Unreconcile a Transaction or Undo a Reconciliation

Feel free to let us know if you need more assistance with this.

Caution, this is neither the real Rustler (Allstar) nor an Intuit employee, it is a scammer.  Do NOT contact them!

You have to undo a reconciliation manually, unless you know someone with QBO Accountant who can use the tool for that.

How to undo bank reconciliation

Welcome, @henry1 and thank you for coming to the QuickBooks Community for assistance. I have some insight on how to undo a reconciliation to pass along.

Thank you @Lexiesmemere for that helpful information. This is correct. Only an accountant type account is able to undo a reconciliation.

To undo a reconciliation:

  1. In QuickBooks Online Accountant, select the client from the drop-down list on the Toolbelt to open the client's company file.
  2. Select the Gear icon on the Toolbar.

  3. Under Tools, select Reconcile.

  4. On the Reconcile an account page, select History by account.
  5. On the History by account page, select the Account and Report period to locate the reconciliation to undo.
  6. From the Action column drop-down list, select Undo.
  7. When prompted to confirm, select Yes.
  8. In the final confirmation window, select Undo.
  9. Select Ok.

The reconciliation is reversed.

On the Action drop down list, all I have is view report or print.

I made a beginning balance adjustment to reconcile an account and then I realized that I wanted to start from the next month so I want to delete the adjustment and undo the reconciliation so I can start from 0 the next month. How do I do that?

Is this for real?

You seriously have to pay a third party company to make amendments to your own business records?

I'm seriously regretting Quickbooks right now.

I'd like to add my voice to this. Users who can complete bank recs need to be able to Undo them. I like to reconcile the account during the month to see what's still open. QB defaults to Finish Now and doesn't even warn that the statement date is after the current date. I've Saved for Later successfully dozens of times but one mistake becomes a major bother.

this is insane, ultimate power should lie with master admin not a consultant.

I agree. If we ask our accountant to undo the reconciliation that is one thing, but we are paying for the QBO subscription and ultimately we are responsible for our own books and record keeping - as we are also reminded BY our accountants, so we should have the ability to Undo the reconciliation, make the needed corrections and carry on.

This is not SOLVED. It has been decided by Intuit to limit the accessibility of their software and it's use by their customers.  How do you decide it needs to be an outside accountant to undo a reconciliation? I'm a CPA who works for a few small businesses as their employee. I believe I know what I'm doing when I undo a reconciliation.  I understand that some users may not, but why not let the business owner decide. I'm sure it's because you get many inquiries from things gone wrong and you spend time helping them. In that case you should charge for different support services then. You shouldn't undo or mess with things you don't understand, but for those that do understand, it is an aggravation. In large accounting software systems I also understand why you can't undo them, but this is QBO, people expect to be able to "Undo" their mistakes. Leave it up to the Master Admin to decide what features someone can or can't do. My .02

Not letting the master admin to undo the bank reconciliation is absolute absurdity. If I pay for an accounting software I better be able to have the full functionality. Quickbooks fail. Is the Quickbooks response still to hire a third party to undo a bank rec? May need to look at Xero for future bookkeeping.

How to undo bank reconciliation

Hi there, hamilton2.

I can see how important it is to have the master admin undo bank reconciliations at once. Then, to have full functionality when using QuickBooks to run your business smoothly.

When undoing bank reconciliation, you can manually unreconciled each transaction or let your accountant do it for you. However, it's still important to consult an Accountant. This is because they understand the cause and effect of undoing an entire reconciliation.

Currently, there are no available apps that can integrate with QuickBooks to undo a bank reconciliation.

After unreconciling, you can reconcile the transactions again. You can also check this article to see different information on how reconciling transactions work in QuickBooks: Learn the reconcile workflow in QuickBooks.

Please know that you're always welcome to post if you have any other concerns. Wishing you and your business continued success.

How to undo bank reconciliation

I am an accountant and I just want to undo a simple bank reconciliation. Its not that scary of a thing.

The best and quickest solution is to create a QB accountant account with quickbooks and do it yourself, its free and you just add yourself as the accountant for your QB company. There is actually more functionality if you just do your bookkeeping from there and avoid these blockers to getting your work done.

Thank you for joining the thread and allow me to share additional information about redoing reconciliation in QuickBooks Online (QBO), @Somi.

The feature of being able to undo the past reconciliations in QBO is available with QBO Accountant. That said, only an accountant user can revert any reconciliations made on the account. Since you have the admin access, you can undo the reconciled transactions one at a time by following the instructions suggested from this article. Or, invite an accountant to your company and have them undo the reconciliation at once.

To learn more about reconciliations in QBO, feel free to read the details from this article.

Once done, you can also read the topics from this link for additional references about banking and QuickBooks.

If there's anything else I can do for you, please don't hesitate to leave a comment below. I'm a post away to help. Take care always!

I am a bookkeeper with over 8 clients.  Every time someone wants to discuss QB online, I talk them out of it.  I spend too much time on my desktop software to try to figure out their online nonsense.  Intuit is always trying to make things goof proof and therefore taking away options that are available to desktop users.
