Is there a reason why transactions will not download when the bank is connected? Also, there are two accounts at the same bank, one works the other does not. Thoughts?

I have had this happen and have had to disconnect broken feed.  Then create a new bank account. Connect it and then merge the new one to the old one. That is the tricky part as if you do it the wrong way (old to new), you lose the bank reconciliations.

There are several possible reasons why transactions won’t download. They include:

  • A connection issue between your bank and QBO.
  • The financial institution’s server is offline.
  • Error messages or codes that require you to perform a certain task.

Let’s try performing a manual update to download entries from your bank. Here’s how:

  1. From the Banking menu, select Banking.
  2. Click the Update button at the right-hand side of the screen.

For more information about the process, check out this article: What to do if bank transactions won’t download. On the same link, you’ll also find different banking errors with their solutions.

When it comes to multiple accounts, determine first how your financial institution sends the entries before connecting to online banking. The likely reason why one of them doesn't work is that the bank downloads transactions to one account only.

If that's the case, you can connect the parent account. If it's to the individual accounts, connect the sub-accounts.

I recommend reading through this article for the details: Connect bank and credit card accounts to QuickBooks Online.

My QB connects to my bank just fine. No error messages, and says I am up to date. But the balance is way off and there is at least one transaction I can see - within the last 3 weeks - that QB just seems to completely ignore. Even with that transaction manually added in, the balance is way off - though it was fine maybe a month ago.

Really frustrating.

Hey there, @NormnM

I hope you're having a great Friday.

May I ask if you're looking at the bank register balance or the QuickBooks register balance?

I recommend completing a reconcile on the account to review the list of transactions to see where the off-balance is coming from. Below I've included the steps on how to perform a reconcile in QuickBooks Online.

1. Review your opening balance. It needs to match the balance of your real-life bank account for the same dates your reconciling.

2. Start your reconciliation by opening the Settings menu and click Reconcile

3. Choose your account you wish to reconcile from the account drop-down menu.

4. Enter the Ending balance and Ending date as its seen on your bank statement.

5. Hit Start reconciling to start the reconcile.

6. Then once you're finished, select Finish now, then Done

For more details, check out: Reconcile an account in QuickBooks Online.

I also recommend having your accountant check out your books to justify the off-balance.  I look forward to your reply. Please let me know if there's anything else I could help you out with by clicking the Reply button below. Take care!

I don't reconcile this account because a) we only have about a dozen transactions per month, and b) why have the accounts sync if I'm going to reconcile anyway? The register goes back to 1/1/14, and so it's unclear to me why this just started happening.

If I look at all transactions since 1/1/20, they are all fine - it's just the one deposit my bank show from 2 weeks ago that QB simply isn't recognizing.

As for the balance, I have no idea. That balance usually matches my bank's to the cent. Maybe 2 weeks ago it was off by a couple of hundred dollars, and I figured it would match up once it synced next. Now it's off by +/-$1500.  It's like it's making the balance up.

Losing reconciliations would been an awesome warning.... QBO has been an awful experience compared to the Desktop version especially with the glitchy issues like simple transactions not downloading and the QBO help says to disconnect, create a new account then merge... OH no warning! Poof.  15 years of expense reconciliations vanished.  AWFUL.
