Something’s not quite right. Unexpected token < in JSON at position 0

I am using Quckbooks 3.5.2.  When I go to Banking...In QuickBooks... I get the error

"Something’s not quite right.  Unexpected token < in JSON at position 0".  I cannot see any of my items.  But when I use a web browser I don't have that problem.  It used to work fine. How do I fix this?

Re: Something’s not quite right. Unexpected token < in JSON at position 0

We can refresh your QBO app to fix this error, Pico.

If you're using the Windows app, you can click Help, and then Reset App Data. This step will help us clear out the stored program files which impacts and causes issues in the program.

If these steps won't work, we'll have to uninstall and reinstall the QBO application. Here's the link to reinstall the app: https://quickbooks.intuit.com/apps/. Scroll down to the Get the QuickBooks Mac or Windows App section, and then click the Free Download button.

If you're using the mobile app, here are the steps to refresh the program:

  1. Click the three dots icon in the upper right-hand corner.
  2. Click Settings.
  3. In the Settings & Help window, scroll down and click Refresh Data.
  4. Click Yes when prompted.
  5. Wait until the process is finished. Then, go back to the Banking page and check if it's working again.

You can always leave a reply to update me with the results. Thanks for dropping by.

I have to same issue on three Windows 10 computers. I've tried clearing cache, resetting app data and uninstalling/reinstalling Quickbooks app, only to have the problem return.

What should I should do if the problem is persistent?  I perform this list of successive actions and it temporarily solves the problem, but the problem consistently comes up and i have to continually fix it.  How should I fix the persistency of this problem?  Thank you.

Thanks for joining this thread, @andrewsaanders, and @ChristinaZ. I know how you feel about this unexpected behavior while in the Banking page using the QBO Desktop App.

This issue is already known to us since yesterday. Our engineers are now working diligently to fix this behavior. I'd recommend you contact our Customer Care team and let them know that you're one of the affected users of INV36818. That way, they will link your company to the case. You will then receive a notification via email for its updates.

You can also refer to the steps above provided by my colleague @JessT in contacting us.

In the meantime, you can continue your work using the regular browser while were still waiting for the resolution. We appreciate your patience on this.

Can you clarify how to reset app data? When I click Help, I get a search box. No links. I type in "reset app data," and nothing of value comes up. To be clear, I am using the Quickbooks Online app for Windows 10. It is not an issue when I run the app from my web browser. I have cleared my cache, deleted my cookies, and uninstalled/reinstalled several times this week but still the error pops up randomly and shuts me down.

Hi @anne-deperty,

I'm here to point you in the right direction so you can get support about your issue with the QuickBooks Online Windows app.

As my peer @katherinejoyceO stated above, there's an open investigation for this specific issue. That could be the cause as to why the Help menu on your app isn't displaying correctly.

Since you already tried the troubleshooting steps we'd recommend in this situation, I suggest you contact our Technical Support team. They can add you to the list of our affected users. This way, you'll be notified once an update becomes available.

Here's how:

  1. Log in to your QuickBooks Online company.
  2. Click the Help menu.
  3. Select Contact us.

Know that you're always welcome to post here in the Community. Leave a question below, and I'll be sure to get back to you.

This "answer" did not solve my issues - still getting the JSON error message. Very frustrating.

Re: Something’s not quite right. Unexpected token < in JSON at position 0

Hi ajo58,

This happens if your browser is full of frequently-accessed page resources that cause QuickBooks Online (QBO) to act strange. You can log in using a private browser. Here are the keyboard shortcuts

Google Chrome: Ctrl + Shift + N
Internet Explorer: Ctrl + Shift + P
Mozilla Firefox: Ctrl + Shift + P
Safari: Command + Option + P

If this works, let's clear your browser's cache so the system can start fresh. But, if you're getting the same result, I recommend switching to a different browser.

In case you need tips and related articles in the future, please check our QuickBooks Help article website for reference: QuickBooks Online (QBO) Help Articles.

Feel free to visit us again if you have any other questions with QuickBooks. We're always here to help.

Same problem for me on my mac! I have uninstalled and re-installed. Doesn't fix it. This has been happening for over 2 weeks!

I expect better service from QBO to find a fix for this. Using the browser version is very frustrating and not a solution.

Re: Something’s not quite right. Unexpected token < in JSON at position 0

Thanks for joining the discussion, @Paulalfredbain.

Basically, if a user encountered unusual behavior while working on your QuickBooks, this can be fixed by clearing your browser's cache. Web-based platforms like QBO collect cache files (cookies) to save you time when loading repetitive data but, too much may cause odd errors.

However, if the problem persists after doing this procedure, I suggest reaching out to our Customer Care Team. They can run a screen-sharing session to help verify what's causing the issue.

I'd appreciate if you can update me on how it goes or if you have any questions. I'll be around to provide further assistance. Take care!

Re: Something’s not quite right. Unexpected token < in JSON at position 0

Although I've already done it twice, clearing my browser's cache is not going to be the solution - this is not happening when running QBO on the web. It's when we run the QBO app on the desktop. Web-based runs just fine, but it is not the solution. When I try to print checks web-based, the alignment comes out wrong. So for now, I am limping along using the web app and having to uninstall and re-install the desktop app every time I need to print a check. Please get this glitch fixed, it's no way to run a business.

Do you have a link to contact your Tech Support team? There are way too many options when I do a web search.

Easier fix, I had this issue off and on...if you sign out and then sign back in it seems to refresh your data.

Re: Something’s not quite right. Unexpected token < in JSON at position 0

I couldn't agree that users expect a much higher level of service. I use both the Windoes and Mac apps to access QBO and have been frustrated by this issue for over a year. I've made several calls to support and have gone through each recommended step at least 10 times each, including recently, but the issues remains unresolved. My business uses 3 other cloud-based systems and we have never experienced this issue with any other system but QBO. I cannot imagine that this is a difficult issue to resolve if QBO was truly "working diligently" to correct it. Please redouble your efforts as the frustration level is growing to the point that I am considerable alternative solutions for our business.

Re: Something’s not quite right. Unexpected token < in JSON at position 0

We also want this resolve, john1665.

I'll surely take note of this so I can send feedback to our developers. Although, there's no specific date yet, rest assured that they're working harder to get this fix.

I'll also keep an eye on this so I can update this thread whenever this issue will be resolved.

Thank you so much for patience and understanding. I'm always here if you need my help.

Re: Something’s not quite right. Unexpected token < in JSON at position 0

I am also having a lot of problems with this issue in the last 10 weeks and it is disappointing that it is taking such a long time to fix.

While it is happening much more frequently, this isn't a new issue and has been happening with the app for several years.  There is really no excuse for not having a better method of handling it within the app long before now.

Re: Something’s not quite right. Unexpected token < in JSON at position 0

My impression is that QB's support, responsiveness, turn-around time on fixes, etc., is absolutely horrendous. Frankly, I don't know how they can stay in business. I've repeatedly asked to speak with a supervisor/manager and have been told, on 5 separate occasions, that one would call me back. NEVER HAPPENED! Other than posting here, I've given up trying. Takes up too much of my time...

Intuit, you listening?

Re: Something’s not quite right. Unexpected token < in JSON at position 0

Hi there, Angst.

This isn't the impression that I'd like for you to be left with and I can see how it would be helpful for you and your business to resolve the issue.

To ensure that I'm on the same page, are you using QBO Desktop App? If so, this has been reported as an ongoing issue with an investigation number INV-37478. Our Product Engineers are now working to fix this as soon as possible.

Since you already contacted our Support Team, rest assured that you will receive an email is when the issue resolve. As a workaround, you'll have to refresh each tab in the QBO Desktop App. You shouldn't need to log out and back into the app to resolve the problem.

I'll be glad to help you if you have any other questions. Have a good day!
