Transaction Category Keeps Changing

Hi,

I started to modify bank transactions by searching 'checks' under 'For Review' Tab.

However, once reclassifying category for one check, it automatically changes ALL transactions with description containing 'check'. It does not affect added transactions, but items to review are still changing category whenever looking up 'check's.

Does anyone knows how to fix this annoying feature? It's really frustrating as a first time QB online user.

Thank you in advance!

Transaction Category Keeps Changing

I appreciate sharing the details about your concern, @SAhn.

We can toggle the default settings on the Banking window. There can be a lot of possibilities when choosing the options found in the Mini Gear icon.

In this case, since all of the transactions are automatically changing their category, I'd suggest unchecking the Enable suggested categorization box to fix the issue.

Let me show you how:

  1. In the Banking window, click the Mini Gear icon.
  2. Then uncheck the Enable suggested categorization box.

  3. Click the Mini Gear icon again to save and close the options.

It won't automatically categorize the banking entries from now on.

I've added an article as your guide on how to add and match entries with your real-life bank: Categorize and match online bank transactions in QuickBooks Online.

Also, I'd recommend reconciling your bank account monthly so you can easily track transactions that cause account depreciation and able to undo them and categorize them on a given date in a short time.

If there are instances that you'll be needing assistance with QuickBooks bank feeds, feel free to post in the Community. I'm always ready to help you. Have a pleasant afternoon!

Transaction Category Keeps Changing

I just turned off this feature - changed the categories on the checks that were affected.  Then I navigated to another screen - went back to banking and they were all changed.  Check numbers and payees all disappeared and it changed the category again on all the transactions.  This is why I would never recommend QB Online to anyone. I've attached the report where all my work disappeared!!  Horrible.

This is not the kind of service we want you to experience in QuickBooks, James1964.

There are times that local internet cache files stored in the system can cause unexpected behavior in the product.

When a browser's cache storage is full or corrupted, it can cause error messages or not loading on certain webpages in QuickBooks Online. Let's rule this out by using an incognito or private browser:

Here's how:

  • For Google Chrome browser: Ctrl + Shift + N
  • For Mozilla Firefox browser: Ctrl + Shift + P
  • For Safari browser: Command + Option + P

If it works, go back to your regular browser and clear the cache to delete those temporarily stored files and browsing history. The overtime collection of data can create corruption, however, removing this should fix the issue. You can also use other supported, up-to-date browsers to roll out the possibility of a browser-related issue.

However, If you get the same result while using a private or a different browser, I recommend contacting our Phone Support Team. This way, they can further investigate this matter and provide additional troubleshooting steps to get this fixed.

Additionally, I've also included this reference for a compilation of articles you can use while working with us: Help Articles for QuickBooks Online
