Updating Product Changes Cost Numbers

I have transactions coming from PayPal in a bank feed.  This works great but sometimes the item name doesn't match up with an item exactly (various reasons on my side for that, I understand why it's happening) so the items ends up listed as PayPal Item.  I then just update it manually in Quickbooks.  However, if there are multiple items there seems to be a little glitch which I took a screen video of at


As you can see in the video, when I change to the desired product it keeps the quantity, but it moves the full calculated amount (Qty * Rate) to the rate box, so it ends up in this case trippling the amount listed (and in the case of the line below would be 20 times the amount).  It's easy enough to reset it to the right amount before adding it, but sure seems like a bug...

I can provide some information about updating product changes from the PayPal account.


Once the transactions are updated via the PayPal account, these changes will not synchronize when imported into QuickBooks Online. All previously created transactions will continue to reflect the old product item. If the income account or default account is affected, you'll need to delete and recreate the transactions. However, if you'll only need to change the product name, then you can edit them manually.

No I get that.  The import part is working as expected.  I was just putting that in there to say how the transaction came to be recorded as it is, maybe I should have left it out.  


The issue is in editing it in QB.  If you watch the video, that is editing the transaction inside of QB.  If you watch, it original is listed as 'PayPal Item' and is 3@ 29.25 for a total 87.75 in amount.  I change the product and it switches to 3@87.75 for a total of 263.25.  It shifts the number that is originally in the 'Amount' column to the 'Rate' column...

One possible reason the rate of the product or service changes upon trying to update it is due to how the item  is set up on your end. It could be that the rate on it is different from the rate set in your PayPal account. Let's review your Product and Service page.


Here's how:

  1. Click the Gear icon.
  2. Choose Product/Service.
  3. In the Product and Service page, locate the specific item.
  4. From the Action's column, click Edit.
  5. Scroll down to the bottom and look for Sales price/rate.

That should do it! If the price or rate is different from your PayPal account, you can modify it.

Sorry I never saw this for some reason and moved on...  However saw it now so resurrecting it.


No that's not it either.  My rates are different that what is there in some cases, but they aren't the numbers that come up either.  I have my payment site set up to dynamically calculate rates in some cases so they can be any calculated amount and don't necessarily line up with what is in the settings as a 'base' rate.  However, it's not taking the base rate, it's very specifically moving the full amount over to the rate column and then multiplying THAT by the quantity so if my quantity is 3 I get triple the total after changing it, if it's quantity 5 I get 5 times the total, and if it's just one it stays the same.  Watch the video and you will see it.  It is still doing it as of now....
