Why is QB entering debits before credits in the register for the same date?

I'm running Premier 2015 and don't recall that my version used to do this, but it's now putting all debits before any credits for the same date.  It makes it very hard to follow and balance.  Is there a preference that I somehow changed?  My Bill Pay account continuously shows a negative balance since it's not entering credits first (see attachment).

Thanks.

Hello there, @MarinasMom.

You have an option to sort the register's entries in QuickBooks Desktop. By default, register's transactions are listed by Date, Type, Number/Ref. You can try each option in the Sort by drop-down list to identify which display you want moving forward.

Here's how:

  1. Go to the Lists menu and click Chart of Accounts

  2. Double-click an account to open the register.

  3. Click the Sort by drop-down list and choose your desired sort.

I've attached an article you can use to review your accounts in QuickBooks to make sure they match your real-life bank and credit card statements: Reconcile an account in QuickBooks Desktop.

Drop me a comment below if you have any other questions. Have a great day ahead.

MaryGraceS - thanks for your response, but that doesn't answer my question.  It isn't a question of sorting.  I've always had the sort by Date, Type, Number/Ref.

What's changed is...if I enter a deposit on 12/27 for $51, and a corresponding payment for $51 on the same day...QB puts the debit ahead of the credit in the register.

Banks don't do it that way.  They enter credits first so all of your money is available, then they enter your debits.  QB used to have my registers with credits first, followed by debits for EACH day.  Now it is (what I consider) backwards.  Why would you deduct your payments first from your balance, and then enter your deposits?

Good day, MarinasMom.

Thanks for coming back to the Community and adding more details about your concern. QuickBooks Desktop register defaults to record debit ahead of the credit. You can only sort register entries by:

  • Date,Type,Number/Ref.
  • Amount (largest first).
  • Amount (smallest firts).
  • Number/Ref.
  • Order Entered.
  • Date and Order Entered.
  • Cleared Status.

While the feature is unavailable, I want you to be updated with the new features added in the software through the New Features option in QuickBooks Desktop.

Here's how:

  1. Go to the Help icon.
  2. Click New Features.
  3. Choose either New Feature Tour or What's New.

Another way of being updated to the latest feature release in QuickBooks Desktop is through this website: QuickBooks Updates: New QuickBooks Accounting Software Updates.

I will get back in this thread from time to time for any updates. Let me know if you've got any questions. Wishing you a good one.

Thanks Charies_M.  I still think that's backwards and hope Intuit would consider changing that.
