Writing checks not using correct check numbers.

When I want to print a check, Quickbooks Online defaults to a check number 1003.  I change this with the first check and it still defaults back to check number 1003.  How do I fix this?

Re: Writing checks not using correct check numbers.

Hi there, Taft.

Let's ensure that your check numbers are in order. I'll be with you through the process of fixing this.

QuickBooks automatically assign the transaction numbers unless if you turn on the Custom Transaction number feature. Thus, once you assign one check number, the rest should generally follow in order.

You'll first verify if this feature is enabled in the Account and Settings page. Here's how:

  1. Go to the Gear icon, then select Account and Settings.
  2. Choose Sales in the left navigation pane.
  3. Pick the pencil icon in the Sales form content section.
  4. Remove the check mark on the Custom transaction numbers box.
  5. Click Save, then Done.

Then, recreate a check and manually enter the transaction number 1004. Once done, write a new check to see if the number sequences in order.

If the same issue persists, you might be experiencing some hiccups with the browser. Once you visit a website, the cache will store the information which can take up space on the computer's memory. If it's overloaded, it can cause unexpected results.

Let's try a couple of steps to see if this is the case:

  • Google Chrome: press Ctrl + Shift + N
  • Mozilla Firefox: press Ctrl + Shift + P
  • Internet Explorer: press Ctrl + Shift + P
  • Safari: press Command + Shift + N

After that, try logging into your QuickBooks Online account, then recreate a check. If it works, go back to your regular browser and clear its cache to remove temporary internet files.

These steps should put your check numbers back in order. If you have other questions in mind, don't hesitate to let me know. I'm only a comment away!
