Hello there, TomP3.
Thanks for trying out the recommended steps above. If you access QuickBooks file over the network, the first option would be to ping the server to ensure you are connected to the network.
1. Identify the name of your server computer.
2. Type ping [name of your server] then press Enter.
If you see a reply for each packet, it means your computer is connected to your network.
Should you need reference on the complete fix for missing company files, you can always check this article.
I'm still here whenever you need help with something else. Have a good one.
Increasing the number will allow more companies to be added to the list as you open them. (It won't suggestively list your history, which wasn't saved as the setting was smaller before you increased it.)
To build out the list, open each company you use and it'll be added.
I cannot find the missing companies to open them and get them on the list. I have set the number of companies to 10--well below the 20 max. I have restarted my computer. I have gone through a quickbooks maintenance through windows. I have emptied my recycle bin. I re entered more than a years worth of data only to find that the the #4 company and dropped to #5 and has disappeared.
I did this step to show more companies—. See I didn’t realize I only had it set up to show 4. So when I created a new company one of mine dropped off somewhere. I can’t seem to find it
Glad you joined this thread, @Bcoker,
To shed some light on your situation, you can do a general search on your computer to locate the company file. Once you launch it, the list of companies will be updated adding the missing working file.
There are a few ways to locate the QBW file. First, let's find it in the default location: C:\Users\Public\Public Documents\Intuit\QuickBooks\Company Files. This location will provide the list of your existing companies created.
Another option is performing a Windows search. You can do that by typing *.QBW on the Start menu. Don't forget to include the asterisk (*) before the extension to ensure accurate results.
Once you found the file, double-click the folder to launch it.
Check out this link for more instructions on how to find a lost company file: Company file is missing or cannot be found.
Let me know what you find after trying out the steps. I'll be right here if you need anything else. Have a wonderful day!
