Hey @JD3,

You can create an Inventory Assembly Item in QuickBooks Desktop that let you put together a Bill of Materials. This article can explain the feature in more detail:

"Creating and adding assembly items to inventory is a two-step process. First, define the Bill of Materials to specify what components go into making the assembly item, then build a quantity of the assembly item so QuickBooks Desktop can deduct the component parts from the inventory and add new quantities of the assembled item. As soon as you build an assembly item, its component parts no longer exist as separate parts in inventory because they have become part of a new inventory item called an inventory assembly."

As far as item maximums, QuickBooks Desktop can handle 14,500 total inventory items and 100 items in an inventory assembly or assembly (might not be enough for what you need).

What kind of business are you accounting for that's creating the BoM's?

Assembly items are only in premier and enterprise for QB desktop

Pro and Premier have the 14,500 item limitation, Enterprise does not

Inventory assembly items can have other assembly items as part of the BOM, helps to get around the 100 item BOM limitation

Assembly Item feature is available in QuickBooks Accountant Desktop version but the limit is 100 items in Accountant and Premier versions. If you need to create over 400 items (up to 500 entries) BOM, you will need the Enterprise version.

True if you do not want to use sub assemblies.  It gets around the high price enterprise which is subscription based now.  Hard for me to imagine a product where you do not build sections (sub assemblies) at a time, and finally put them all together for the final product.
