Starting a new accounting business

Looking to start my own accounting business. What quickbooks version to buy and not have high costs for using the software? How to prevent high if doing payroll on quickbooks and not paying too much for running payroll for different clients?

Hey @kanwal78,

Happy holidays and a warm welcome to the QB Community! It's a great question, both programs (QuickBooks Online and QuickBooks Desktop) have their advantages.

Another important question to ask - what tools are your clients using? I will defer to the accounting experts - @Anonymous, @lynda, what are your thoughts?

Or you could also ask @Rustler. He has a great knowledge of the QBs products.

@kanwal78

It really depends on your client base

QBO and QB desktop are two different programs, with much different capabilities.

QB desktop is really broken down into two segments when you are supporting clients.  Enerprise, the highest priced requires enterprise accountant, whereas pro and premier can be supported with premier accountant (but not enterprise accountant).

Regardless of which you choose you have to understand the way QB works, it is not a journal entry accounting program like they teach.  So really the basic question is which are you proficient with?  QBO or QBDT?

In addition to what's already been said, you may also want to be familiar with these QuickBooks sites:

1) Get "QuickBooks Online Accountant" version (aka QBOA) from this website. Just click "Sign up for free" button:

https://quickbooks.intuit.com/accountants/online/
This is QuickBooks Online Accountant version for handling clients accounts and also one free account for your business.

2) QuickBooks website for accountants
https://quickbooks.intuit.com/accountants/

All kinds of helpful info here.

3) QuickBooks ProAdvisor Program
https://quickbooks.intuit.com/accountants/proadvisor/
It's worth reviewing it if you want to be in accounting service business. You can always chat or call from this website link for more information.

Hope this helps!

Welcome! Starting a new accouting business, EXCITING !!! I would advise to review your client base. I personally am an advocate for QuickBooks Online because it allows me to work remotely in real time with clients and the price points are very reasonable. As for payroll, you can run the payroll for your clients or you can have QuickBooks run the payroll for that particular client. It all depends on how you structure your business packages. I also enjoy QuickBooks Online because of Proconnect Tax Online. I am able to seemlessly transfer business clients information into the system.

As for my client base, I have many clients in 7 different States. I enjoy the diversity because it actually provides me with the ability to travel for my business. Although travelling may not be necessary but when I assist my client with obtaining a loan to get a bigger space for his business I went to his State for the grand opening. It was so much fun!

I started out by listing what I wanted for my clients and myself and then I found a product that was suitable.

Absolutely Quickbooks online.  All the way!  You get a free version.  You can give your client’s wholesale pricing.  Also, you get free payroll with qbo and discounted rates for client’s there too.  I use only Full Service payroll with my customers as they do it for less than I could.

Good luck in your new business!

I like both programs. It really depends on your preferences and needs like mentioned before.

QB desktop has alot more features. I also like that you pay one price and you can have unlimited clients. While at first it may be expensive, as you get more clients, your price per client is lower.

For QBO, you get your accountant free, but each client costs the client a fee. However, I like online because it does not take up the space that desktop does, and you can access it from any internet connection. This is very handy. In addition, my clients like the option that they can log in and see thier finances. (They never do, but they still have the option if they ever wanted to). Therefore, I find that clients perfer the online version better.

All in all, it really depends on the features you are going to be using the most. I do not do payroll through QB so I can not provide information on that.  Good luck with your new accounting business :)

@JenPM, excellent points, I appreciate your analysis.

@kanwal78, small business training firm Fit Small Business authored a fantastic guide that can help you decide which program is best for you – their conclusion, use QuickBooks Desktop for inventory tracking and QuickBooks Online for ease of use.
