Troubleshoot efile or epay rejection issues

Learn what to do when your e-filing or e-payment is rejected.

In some instances you may experience issues when you try to e-file or e-pay with the IRS through QuickBooks Desktop. We share solutions to the three most common e-File/e-pay reject issues.

Requirements

To take advantage of e-file or e-pay within QuickBooks Desktop you need:

  • An Enhanced Payroll subscription
  • A supported version of QuickBooks Desktop
  • An internet connection
  • The most recent payroll update

I have my PIN for 94X e-filing but it keeps rejecting?

If this is your first time filing your 94X through QuickBooks Desktop, do the following:

  • Verify you are entering the 10 digit numeric PIN you requested and received from the IRS after enrolling to e-file the 94X
  • Re-enter the PIN into QuickBooks Desktop and submit the filing again.

If you need further assistance, please contact the IRS E-File Help Desk at 866-255-0654.

I have had successful filings in the past. And now my 940/941 filing is rejecting. Why?

If you have successfully filed 94X filings, your Credential Vault might be corrupted. To determine if this is the issue:

  1. Go to the E-File Login page and uncheck the Remember My Information for Next Time box.
  2. Verify and re-enter your 10 digit numeric PIN you requested and received from the IRS after enrolling to e-file the 94X.
  3. Re-submit your filing.

If this resolves the issue, the next time you file your 940/941 check the Remember My Information for Next Time box so your Login information is captured. And re-entered into the Credential Vault.

If you need further assistance, please contact the IRS E-File Help Desk at 866-255-0654.

I changed my Bank Account in QuickBooks for my EFTPS payment. And now I cannot send a payment. What is happening?

If you changed your e-payment bank account in QuickBooks Desktop, you must also change it on the EFTPS.gov website. In addition, you must notify any state agencies receiving e-payments of the bank account change. For additional information, please see Change bank account for e-payment of tax liabilities (federal or state tax).
