Assign more than 1 Quickbooks Payroll item to an employee

Can I assign more than 1 Quickbooks Payroll item to an employee.  I then export it to Quickbooks for Mac expense accounts.  I don't see a way to assign both a salary pay ritem and a commission item to an employee, so they go to different expense accounts in QuickBooks for Mac.

I was directed to the "Export" section of the "Payroll Settings".

Anyone know if and how this can be accomplished?

Assign more than 1 Quickbooks Payroll item to an employee

Hi there,

When moving your payroll data from QuickBooks Online (QBO) to QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) for Mac, you'll have to ensure that you set up the correct accounts on the Export Preferences page. Here's how:

  1. Navigate to the Gear icon and choose Payroll Settings.
  2. Click the Pencil icon next to Export
  3. Next, click the Change hyperlink and choose QuickBooks Desktop for Mac.
  4. Select tap Continue
  5. From there, select the correct accounts for each field.
  6. When finished, click Done.
  7. This will provide an IIF file that you can import to your QBDT for Mac program.

For your information, please see this article: Export, import, and edit IIF files.

Then, you can add multiple payroll items for your employee on their paychecks. You can check this link for more details: Edit payroll items used on paychecks.

You may also want to browse through our QuickBooks Help page if in case you need additional guides to perform your QuickBooks tasks.

Don't hesitate to post again here if you have any other concerns about managing payroll items in QuickBooks. I'd be glad to help you once more. Have a good one.

Thank you for your reply, but you misunderstood my question.

This has nothing to do with QuickBooks online.

This has to do with QuickBooks online Payroll and a long-standing QuickBooks for Mac Company file.

I need to pay one employee for salary in some paychecks, and for commissions in other paychecks.

I have paid this employee salary paychecks for years; I want to be able to export the commission paychecks to the "Commissions" expense account in QuickBooks for Mac, not to the salary expense account.

When I go into the Accounting Preferences in Payroll, I don't see a way to add commissions to my export choices.

Assign more than 1 Quickbooks Payroll item to an employee

Hello there, pissed again.

I appreciate you for adding more details about the issue. The information you shared gives us a clearer view of what’s happening to the paychecks.

In situations like this, we’ll have to review the accounts linked to your payroll items. This will help identify why you’re unable to add commissions in the Accounting Preferences.

However, I have to gather personal data to perform this task, which I’m unable to perform in the Community for security reasons. I recommend contacting our QuickBooks Online (QBO) Payroll Team for further assistance. They can guide you through the process of adding the commissions and ensure they’re exported to QuickBooks Desktop for Mac.

  1. In QBO, navigate to the Help icon at the top to open the QB Assistant window.
  2. Head to the Assistant tab and type a brief description of your concern in the Type something field.
  3. Click the Get help from a human link and follow the on-screen steps to complete the process.
  4. In How would you like to connect with us? section, choose Chat to start a conversation or Callback to speak with an agent.

If you’re using Intuit Online Payroll, click here to get the contact information and select your payroll service from the list. For additional resources, the links below will guide you on how to move payroll data to QuickBooks. You’ll also learn about the process of setting up your preferences.

We’ve collected articles to help users efficiently run any payroll tasks in the online program. The topics include processing taxes, forms, managing workers' data, and so on: QBO Payroll.
