Hi there, BobOSLCl.

I'll share some information about how pay types work in QuickBooks Online.

You're right. This feature is available in the QuickBooks Online Payroll UK version. Currently, the option to add a specific pay type is unavailable in QBOP US version. These are our supported pay types as of now:

  • Allowance / Bereavement
  • Cash Tips / Paycheck Tips
  • Clergy Housing (Cash / In Kind)
  • Commission
  • Company contribution to an HSA
  • Double overtime
  • Group-term life insurance > $50,000
  • Holiday pay
  • Nontaxable per diem
  • Other earnings
  • Overtime
  • Personal Use of Company Car (PUCC)
  • Reimbursement
  • S-Corp Owners Health Insurance

We can use the Other Earnings option if you need to create taxable payments that are separate from regular wages, such as pay increases and severance pay to your employee. I'll show you how:

  1. Select Workers from the sidebar menu.
  2. Go to the Employees tab.
  3. Select the name of the appropriate employee.
  4. Click Edit employee.
  5. Under How much do you pay section, click Add additional pay types.
  6. Choose Other Earnings, from the Even more ways to pay drop-down.
  7. Click Done, to complete the process.

I recommend reading this article to know more about the supported pay types and deductions in QuickBooks Online Payroll as well as how each impacts federal taxes and forms: Supported pay types and deductions explained.
