To make the employee inactive, you can change the status as Terminated or Not On Payroll. Let me provide steps on how to achieve this.

If the Employment section is not showing and you have not run payroll yet. I suggest to contact us by clicking the Help icon in your QuickBooks account. You can also refer to this link: Contact the QuickBooks Online Customer Support team.

I have been trying to solve this problem for months. I don't have the pencil Icon anywhere on the employee list. We don't use quickbooks for payroll. I have tried alternate browsers, private mode, in short have followed all the steps in the other threads on this topic, and can't seem to make it work.
Please tell me what to do.

In QBO, the option to inactivate an employee is not available if you haven’t finished setting up payroll. To hide the worker from the list, I recommend reaching out to our Payroll Support Team. They can access your account in a secure space and have extra tools to help remove the name.
