Change employee state withholding tax

Let me share some information about updating W-4 filing information to update the W-4 info like federal and state withholding, kayeme,

Only the primary/company admin and standard user with payroll access can edit the data in Form W-4 and update the state withholding tax rate. If an employee doesn't have the appropriate permissions, they'll need to contact their employer to make changes to the form. Here's how:

  1. Go to the Payroll menu.
  2. Select the Employees tab.
  3. Click the name of the employee.
  4. Select Edit, under the Tax withholding section.
  5. Make the necessary changes.
  6. When you're done, press Save.

If the same thing happens, let's try some basic troubleshooting tests to figure this out. Open a private browser and change the employee state withholding tax. The private mode prevents the cache from being retained while the website is operational, which may cause problems. Here is a list of shortcut keys you can use to access one:

  • Ctrl+ Shift + N for Google Chrome A63.PNG
  • Ctrl + Shift + P for Mozilla Firefox A64.PNG and Microsoft Edge A65.PNG
  • Command + Shift + N for Safari A66.PNG

If it works fine, go back to your original browser and clear its cache to start fresh. Moreover, you can use another supported and up-to-date browser to narrow down the result.

Change employee state withholding tax

I do this all the time.  The problem I have that I save and it shows up in the employee tax withholding area correct.  When I run my next payroll it does not update to what I put in.  So I have to manually change.

So the save button doesnt work.

When I go back into the employee information.  All is good.

Let's make sure we'll be able to resolve your issue, kayeme.

Generally, issues related to updating taxes can be solved by performing browser troubleshooting steps.

If you've already performed the troubleshooting steps provided by my colleague @RCV and you're still unable to change your state tax, I recommend reaching out to our support team again so they can take a look into this issue and investigate further. This way, they'll be able to check if there are also other users who are experiencing the same and create an investigation if it's necessary. I'll provide the steps on how to reach them again:

  1. Click the Help icon at the top to open the QB Assistant window.
  2. In the Assistant tab, enter the issue/topic in the field box.
