Child Support Garnishment not Showing on P&L

I was trying to reconcile the payroll expenses on the 2019 P&L to the payroll expenses on the 2019 Payroll Summary report.  It seems that Child Support Garnishments are not showing anywhere on the P&L.  Where should it show and how do I get it to show there?  I am applying for the Paycheck Protection Program tomorrow (hopefully) and want to be prepared in case they ask for our 2019 P&L.  I don't know if it matters but we have Assisted Payroll.  I would greatly appreciate some help!

Child Support Garnishment not Showing on P&L

Hi there, Jeanette68,

Thank you for sharing your concern for today about the Child Support Garnishment not showing on the P&L report.

QuickBooks Desktop will ask you to select a liability account to track deductions you will pay. Make sure to select the correct payroll expense one for this item. This could be the reason why the child support deduction isn't showing up on the P&L report.

To verify the setup:

  1. Go to the Lists menu, then click Payroll Item List.
  2. Locate and double-click the child garnishment item to open it.
  3. Click Next until you see the Agency for employee-paid liability page.
  4. Choose a liability account, then click Next until you see the Finish button.

Now, you can go back to the P&L report and review the statement to ensure your record is accurate.

Feel free to read through this article: Set up a payroll garnishment item for more details.

Also, here's a Tax Guide to help you prepare and file federal and state payroll forms in QuickBooks Desktop Payroll Assisted.

Keep me posted if there's anything else I can help you concerning payroll. I always have your back.

Thank you and stay safe!

If these are garnishments for your employees, they are not expenses.  You're setting aside some of the employee's money to be paid to a 3rd party, which while this is work for you, is not an expense to your company.

The concept is like employee taxes, such as Federal Withholding tax, where you hold back the money for the tax and then give it to the IRS, but that tax is not an expense to you (the salary that the the tax is based on is an expense.)
