How can i opt out of the Washington State Paid Family Leave Payroll deduction.

I am a self employed owner of an LLC, using Quickbooks to pay myself an annual salary. I need to opt out of the WA State Paid family leave tax, as I am not required to pay the tax as a self employed person. I can only find a way to change the tax rates. How can I opt out of having the tax held from my paychecks?

Hello there, mikepwilson

Thank you for taking the time to post here in the Community.

I’ll help ensure you’re able to opt out the payroll deduction in QuickBooks Online Payroll (QBOP).

Since you’ve verified from the State agency that you aren’t required to pay this payroll tax, you can set it up as exempt on the Employee Details page. By doing so, it will not withhold from your future paychecks. Here’s how:

  1. Go to the Workers from the left menu.
  2. Select Employees.
  3. Select the employee's name.
  4. Under Employee Details, click on the pencil icon beside Pay.
  5. Click on the pencil icon under the question What are (employee's name) withholdings?.
  6. Scroll down until you reach the Tax Exemptions section, then click on the drop down arrow.
  7. Select Washington Paid Family and Medical Leave tax.
  8. Click Done.

For more information, you can check out this article: Employee Payroll Tax Exemptions. To learn more about this payroll item, please visit the Washington Paid Family and Medical Leave (New Tax 2019) article.

This will get you going, mikepwilson. If you have other payroll concerns, please let me know. I’m always here to help. Have an awesome day!
