## How can I tax items based on their volume of liquid? There is a 5 cent per milliliter tax on electronic cigarette e liquid in North Carolina.

I have to add 5 cents of tax per milliliter of eliquid I sell in North Carolina. I need to be able to tax 30ml @ \$1.50, 60ml @ \$3, 100ml @ \$5 etc. Is there any way to do this?

Edit: To clarify, I am not filling bottles with a custom amount of liquid, the bottles are pre-filled to 30ml,60ml,100,ml etc.I just need to be able to charge tax based on size or volume, not a % of the sale price. I.E. A 30ml bottle that's \$12.99 and one that is \$19.99 have the same volume (30ml) of eliquid. So they would both be charged \$1.50 tax because 30 x 5 cents is \$1.50

## then you have to use the qty block on the invoice or sale...

then you have to use the qty block on the invoice or sales receipt as the number of ml being sold

that also means you have to stock the liquid using a qty of one = 1 ml

Ok, I think I see what you are getting at, it just seems like there should be a better way lol. To clarify, I am not filling bottles with a custom amount of liquid, the bottles are pre-filled to 30ml,60ml,100,ml etc.I just need to be able to charge tax based on size or volume, not a % of the sale price. So they would both be charged \$1.50 tax because 30 x 5 cents is \$1.50.  In other news, any new tax locations I am making are not showing up as options when I click the dropdown menu when I am editing items. Thanks for your answer!

## ahh I see, in that case ignore what I suggested you need...

ahh I see, in that case ignore what I suggested

you need to create a liability account named for the tax you collect, and a service item named that way which links to the liability account.  Use that item on the transaction with the tax amount

QB can not do this kind of surtax as sales tax

if you pay the surtax with sales tax, do an adjustment, increase, use the liability account for the adjustment, then pay all sales tax.
