How do I change the address for an employee?

I was finally able to get someone on the QB chat support last week. They were very helpful. Here's how we got it to work:
1) They had to switch one of my inactive employees to active (there was no option for me to do this myself). 
2) I had submit a payroll with 1hr to generate a "dummy" paycheck for them (switched to paper check first), then deleted the paycheck  since I wasn't really paying them.

3) This somehow changed the options I saw when editing any employee so that I could edit their address and their employment status.

 

The chat agent was very helpful and said I should always leave at least one employee active when unsubscribing from payroll if I intended to resubscribe later. This really seems like a bug in the QBO software, but at least now I know how to avoid it.  Thanks to everyone who tried to help!

How do I change the address for an employee?

Changing the employee's address only takes a few steps, brad-mendenhall.

 

Here's how you do it on QuickBooks:

  1. Click Workers on the left pane.
  2. Select Employees.
  3. Select the employee's name.
  4. Click the pencil icon on the Profile section.
  5. Edit their address.
  6. Select Done to save changes.

I don't have a pencil there. Maybe my problem is that all my employees are inactive? We're a seasonal business with no employees in the winter time. I don't even see an option to make them active.

Let's make your employees active again, Brad.

 

With the steps provided by my colleague MaryLurleenM, let's make sure to select Inactive employees from the drop-down menu. This is under the Employee List section.

What you describe and show are exactly what I've seen in the past, but now I am not given an option to edit some employee information, such as address. We have a seasonal summer business and I unsubscribed from payroll for the summer, then reactivated in early January to generate W2s. All my employees are inactive now. I can generate W2s for them but not change employee addresses. It really seems like something is broken in my setup.

 

I've waited for a chat agent for 3 hours even though it says, "We'll be with you in 5 minutes." I am VERY disappointed in Inuit's support. I know this is a very busy time for them, but it's not their first year going through this.

We'll have to reactivate your employees to edit their information, brad-mendenhall. 

 

Aside from ensuring that you've activated your payroll subscription, we'll also have to make sure that the employees are activated as well. You can follow the steps given by my colleague @RenjolynC on how to make them active. 

 

A browser-related issue can also cause the options no to function well. We can access QuickBooks and activate, then, edit the employee details through a private browser. If everything looks as expected, we can go back to your main browser to clear the cache that sometimes caused QuickBooks unusual behavior. We can also use other browsers such as Google Chrome, Internet Explorer, and Mozilla Firefox to get rid of unexpected performances in QuickBooks.

How do I change the address for an employee?

Thanks for trying to help, but it's still not working for me. Here are some things I've tried:

1) Subscription shows subscribed to enhanced payroll.

2) Maybe payroll isn't set up completely?
Workers->employees (no active employees)
It says, "Let's set you up to pay employees." with a green button: "Get set up"
I click it, it opens "Actions required" with, "Get your employees' tax info squared away", 

So I click on "Let's go", it opens Employees tax info with: "Enter some key details and review your employees' W-4 info." and the list all our former employees. The ones with a hire date in 2013 have a red ! next to them, so I clicked the W4 for them, when I click the "W-4 info" for any employee, I get "Please try again. (Error Code 1)".  No obvious way to get passed this. 

 

3) I went back to the employee list, set to inactive employees, searched on one, click on their name, it opens "Edit employee details" for them.  I can change their name, hire date, e-mail, how often to pay, how much to pay, direct deposit, etc, but NOT their status! So I have no way to make them active. 


4) I tried a Chrome incognito window, no difference. Tried clearing cache on Chrome, no difference. Tried MS Edge browser, no difference.

 

5) Tried to chat with a Quickbooks help agent again yesterday. Waited for 4 hours with no response! The chat box says something like, "We'll be with you in 5 minutes". Not impressive.  I can't wait till Zoho Books supports payroll for my state.  Sorry, but this on top of a HUGE price increase is not winning QB my love. We've used this for at least 7 years and the quality is going down while the price goes up.

This isn't the kind of customer service we want you to experience. Though, I recommend contacting our Customer support team as they have the tools to pull up your account to determine what causes you unable to edit out employee's information.

 

To keep in touch with our Customer Support here's how: 

 

  1. Select Help (?) at the top right.
  2. Select Contact Us to connect with a live support agent.  
  3. Enter the questions briefly.
  4. Click Let's talk
  5. Choose a way to connect with us. Start a chat or Get a call back.

How do I change the address for an employee?

What if therre is no pencil icon  and no options to edit employess?  All my employees are "active" and I'm not able to edit any information or add a work locatiionn in order to w/hold proper sttate income  tax.  

 

I've already contacted support and Payroll  help, neither helped nor knew why I didn't  have the  option.  Escalated my problem and "would call me back"  It's been over 3 weeks now and nothing

  1. Sign in
  2. Click the Gear Icon
  3. Choose Accounts and Settings
  4. Under Company name, scroll down to Address.
  5. Click the pencil Edit icon. 
  6. Make desired changes.

Hello @Brian1973,

 

You can change your address directly from your Intuit profile. Let me show you how.

  1. Go to the button next to the Gear icon.
  2. Select Manage your Intuit Account.
  3. Click Personal Info.
  4. On the Address section, enter your address.
  5. Click Save.

How do I change the address for an employee?

This still is not fixing it where it needs to be. If I go to employee and go to my profile it still shows my Georgia address.

 

 When I try to edit that, it will not let me change the state from Georgia to Alabama.

 

Cad someone do a joingotomeeting with me so I can show them what I am getting?

Thanks for dropping by the Community today. If you tried the steps above and the address still hasn't changed, I can recommend you reach out to our support team. They don't use the joingotomeeting tool that you recommended but they have their own version of a screen sharing tool that will allow them to look into your account with you in a private 1-on-1 setting to determine why you cant change that address. To reach them, follow these steps:

  1. Sign in to your QuickBooks Online company.
  2. Select Help (?) at the top right.
  3. Enter your concern, then select Let's talk.
  4. Select Contact Us to connect with a live support agent.
  5. Choose a way to connect with us:
    • Start a chat with a support expert.
    • Get a callback from the next available expert.

Make sure to reach out during standard operating hours:

  • Plus, Essentials, Simple Start M-F 6 AM to 6 PM PT and Saturday 6 AM to 3 PM PT
  • Advanced, any time, any day
