How do I get the IRS to accept 1099 NEC as a sole proprietor using their SSN?

I file with my personal name and SSN. This is how my taxes are filed with the IRS and ALL my Schedule C forms since inception. Now the IRS is rejecting efiled 1099 NEC with exact same information. Can i only use paper forms now as a pass-through LLC using their SSN.

How do I get the IRS to accept 1099 NEC as a sole proprietor using their SSN?

Hello there, @james165. Thank you for reaching out about this. I can certainly see how this is an unexpected step in your filing process, and I’m here to help.

If the LLC was formed with a business name (even if using an SSN), the IRS expects the LLC’s legal name on 1099s not the owner’s personal name. If they’ve been filing Schedule C under their personal name but the LLC has a different registered name, that mismatch can trigger a rejection.

Other common reasons for 1099-NEC rejections include a mismatch between your company’s legal name,  Employer Identification Number (EIN), or Social Security number (SSN) and IRS records, or incorrect contractor information such as address.

To get this resolve, you must resubmit your 1099s with the updated information. To begin with, let's review which forms were rejected. Here's how:

  1. Hover over to All apps and choose Payroll.
  2. Select Contractors, then click on View 1099 filings.
  3. Find the alert on the page that explains why the IRS declined your 1099 forms.

Then, void your rejected 1099 forms by selecting Void forms from the 1099 filings tab.

Once done, proceed to Steps 3 and 4 to update and resubmit your forms: Fix rejected 1099 forms.
