How do I make an inactive employee active again

Hello, flanagan5.

Thanks for visiting the Community. I'd be glad to show you how to make an inactive employee active again.

There are just a few steps to get this done. Here's how:

1. Click the Workers tab from the left navigation bar.

2. Make sure Employees is selected at the top of the page.

3. Choose the drop-down list showing Active employees, select All employees.

4. Click the inactive employee.

5. Select the small pencil icon in the Employment section.

6. In the Status drop-down, click Active.

7. Click Done.

The employee will now be active once again and you're all set. I'll be here if you have any other questions.

There is no Employment button and I can't figure out why.  It seems this is an issue with other users as well.

That doesn't work either.  I just get a "refresh" message.

Thanks for letting me know the Employment button isn't showing.

As an initial troubleshooting step, you may want to try clearing the cache in your internet browser. Sometimes the cache can become bogged down with old data, potentially causing viewing or performance errors in the system.

This article provides steps on how to clear the cache depending upon which browser you're using: https://quickbooks.intuit.com/community/Getting-Started/How-do-I-clear-my-browser-cache-and-temporar....

Let me know how things look after trying this and we can continue from there.

I cleared the cache and I still can not see the employment tab.  Any other suggestions?

How do I make an inactive employee active again

Hi, flanagan5.

I appreciate you following up with me.

I've got an article for you that offers even more detailed instructions on changing your employee's status in QuickBooks Online. You can check it out here: https://quickbooks.intuit.com/community/Employees-and-payroll-taxes/How-to-make-an-employee-inactive....

I'll attach a couple of screenshots to show you what the page should look like.

If the problem persists, I recommend calling in to speak with a member of the Support Team. Agents have the necessary tools, like screen-sharing, to take a look at your account and determine what's causing the employment tab to not appear. The number to speak with an agent is 1-800-488-7330. The most up-to-date contact information can be found here: https://help.quickbooks.intuit.com/en_US/contact.

Feel free to comment and let me know how the conversation goes. I'll be on standby.

My screen looks nothing like that.  I did call support and shared my screen so that they could help me.  They could make the employee active on their side but couldn't figure out why I had no edit button or employment button on my side.  They said to call back if I needed anymore employees activated.  I really wish I knew why this is such an issue and why no one can figure it out.

Through further research, I was able to see that the engineers are aware of this problem and are diligently working to get it fixed. To be added to the open case regarding the problem with the Employee details screen, please give the Support Team another call and advise them this viewing error is most likely related to Investigation #5315.

Once you're added to the list of affected companies, you'll then receive email notifications with updates on the fix.

I wish you continued success. Please let me know if there's anything else I can assist you with.

How do I make an inactive employee active again

That's interesting, I have a similar issue with the contractors' tab. I have two contractors that are active and one that will not stay active. I fill in the information and then switch it to active. After I leave and come back to the page it states it's inactive and all of the information that I placed in the appropriate boxes are now empty. (i.e. ITIN etc.)

Any advice on working this effort would be greatly appreciated.

We have this issue reported to our engineers, rebnetik,

They are currently investigating the cause of this behavior and at the same time working on the fix. In the meantime, let's create a new contractor and enter the same information by following these steps:

  1. On the left panel, click Workers.
  2. Click the Contractors tab.
  3. Click the Add a contractor button.
  4. Enter the Name and Email.
  5. Click Add contractor.

I'd also suggest contacting one of our Phone Support Specialists. This way, they can add your company information to the list of affected users.

Here's how to get our contact information:

  1. Go to this link: https://help.quickbooks.intuit.com/en_US/contact
  2. Select QuickBooks Online. and choose Account Management.
  3. Choose Manage Subscription.

How do I make an inactive employee active again

My QB made inactive employees active and my monthly payroll bill reflected this so I was charged too much. I am also not able to change those employees back to inactive. I get this is a known error but should the customers being paying for it?

The investigation (unable to make employee inactive) that is attached to this thread has already been closed, legendsguy1.

Also, inactive employees are no longer counted by the system and therefore not part of your monthly per-employee fee.

I'd recommend contacting our phone support team. They'll verify your account and review your billing details so they can help you further with this. Here's the updated steps on how you can reach out to them:

  1. Click the Help menu and select Contact Us.
  2. Let them know that you're charged for the per-employee fee for inactive employees.
  3. Click Let's talk.
  4. Select Message an agent or Get a callback.

Don't hesitate to reach out to us again in case you need additional help with QuickBooks.
