In QuickBooks Online (QBO), you can use the Project feature that helps you track income, material costs, and labor expenses for the work you do.

To turn on this feature, here's how:

  1. Click the Gear icon at the top.
  2. Select Account and Settings
  3. In the left menu, tap Advanced
  4. Go to the Projects section and hit the Edit ✎ to expand it.
  5. Choose the Organize all job-related activity in one place checkbox.
  6. Hit Save and close your settings.

For more information about this, here's a reference: Set up and create projects in QuickBooks Online.

If you're using QuickBooks Online Payroll, the system will use the most recent payroll to calculate hourly time costs for you. You can see the "How to Use QuickBooks Projects to Track Project Income & Costs (w/ QuickBooks Online Payroll)" article to know more about how to use the Project.

On the other hand, if you're not using QuickBooks Online Payroll, to calculate your hourly time costs, here's what you'll need to do:

  1. In the left menu, click Projects.
  2. Tap the Hourly cost rate button at the upper right hand.
  3. Hit Add next to the employee's name.
  4. Choose the calculator icon to pull up the hourly cost calculator.
  5. Enter the worker’s hourly wage and employer taxes (per hour).
  6. Fill in additional employer taxes, workers’ comp, and overhead.
  7. Select Add, then Save to add hourly cost rate.
  8. Click Done.
