I just did a QB update and lost data

This morning I followed a pop up … QB update  … when I went in to log into QB

Now I have lost three months of payroll data and it will not recognize back ups.

Any Ideas on how I can retrieve data? I'm going switch away from QB they are to big to be concerned about the little guy.

I just did a QB update and lost data

Hello there, akasper3.

I'm here to ensure you'll be able to retrieve your QuickBooks data. This way, you can get back to business in no time.

Once you update QuickBooks, your company file should not be removed. This usually happens because of the following reasons:

  • Your company file was moved or renamed.
  • Your computer is disconnected from the path where the QuickBooks file is located.
  • Your QuickBooks file has been deleted from your computer.

To fix this, I'd recommend performing a wild card search in your server computer. This will locate all your company files and retrieve them.

  1. Go to the Windows or Start Menu.
  2. Search or directly type in either *.qbw (Working Files) or *.qbb (Back-Up Files).
  3. Select Open File Location.

Once the file is found, you can now open or restore it in QuickBooks. To open your company file, here's how:

  1. Go to the File menu.
  2. Select Open or Restore Company.
  3. Choose Open a Company File.
  4. Click Next.
  5. Select the company file.
  6. Click Open.

To restore a backup file, kindly refer to these steps:

  1. Go to the File menu.
  2. Select Open or Restore Company.
  3. Choose Restore a Backup File.
  4. Click Next.
  5. Select Local backup.
  6. Choose the company file, then select Next.
  7. Select the location where you’d like to save the restored file.
  8. Click Save.

In addition, QuickBooks Desktop also has a feature called Auto Data Recovery (ADR). In case of data loss or corruption, it'll help you in recovering all your data files. To know more about it, you can check out this article: Recover lost data with QuickBooks Auto Data Recovery.

Please let me know if you have other concerns. I'm just around to help.
