I just updated my payroll and it is still not giving me access to the 941 for 2020. Is this not yet available on quickbooks, or have I done something wrong?

Hey there, @FreshStartOrganizing

Thanks for reaching out. I hope you're enjoying your day so far.

This is available in QuickBooks Desktop. Allow me to explain how to access this below.

  1. Open the Employees menu at the top. Then, you'll choose Payroll Forms & W2s.
  2. Click Process Payroll Forms
  3. Select 941/Schedule B or Annual Form 940/ Sch. A. Then, you'll hit Create Form
  4. Choose the Year or Quarter from the small drop-down arrow. Pick your Quarter Ending date
  5. Click OK
  6. Finish the interview for your Form and hit Next
  7. Save and Close once you're ready.

Check out: Learn how to prepare and print Form 941, Schedule B, and Form 940 and E-file 940, 941, and 944 tax forms for more details.

However, if you're still not seeing the option to access the 941 form, I recommend running a repair on your QuickBooks program. Running a repair will resolve any broken components and any damage in the program.

Please let me know if you have further questions and concerns. I'm only a post away. Please remember you can always reach out to the Community or me anytime you find you need help. Have a good one!

The issue is that I don't get the text on the form. Just the autofill information. It's like looking at a document that has had most of the information on it eliminated. The form is set to autofill, but I have never had this experience. FYI -- I have upgraded to QB2020 in June and this is the first time I've tried to file a quarterly report.

Hello, @oyattl.

We're able to access the Form 941 in QuickBooks Desktop by following the steps provided by Tori B above. If the details don't auto-populate on the form, we can perform some troubleshooting steps to resolve the issue. First, update your QuickBooks Desktop to the latest release, then get the latest payroll tax table version.

To update QuickBooks:

  1. Open your QuickBooks Desktop account, then go to the Help menu.
  2. Select Update QuickBooks Desktop.
  3. Go to the Options tab, and tick the Mark All button.
  4. Click the Update Now tab, then put a check-mark on the Reset Update box.
  5. Hit Get Updates. Once the update is complete, restart your computer and right-click the QBDT icon then choose Run as Administrator.

Once done, proceed with updating your payroll tax table version.

If you're getting the same error, I encourage reaching out to our Support Team to check and investigate this further. To contact support, check out this link.

Also, you can consider reading this article to learn more about how QuickBooks generates Form 941.

Mention me in the comment section below if you have any other questions. I'm a few clicks away to help. Have a good day!

Turns out that rebooting my system cleared up the problem (nothing else did). After rebooting I was able to open the 941 Report form correctly.
