I would likes to record sales tax payments for 2017 and 2018. I payed the tax using IL/CA website and #CC. I want to match the payments with tax due for 2017/18. Thx!

I didn't have QB in 2017 or 2018. I'm recording all the transactions 2 years back. I collected the sales tax in two states, payed them on the required basis. Recently I added an app that downloaded all my sales and sales tax due. The app downloaded all the transactions for the 2017/18/19. The sales tax due was recorded to Other Current Liabilities/Sales Tax Payable. I payed sales tax in 2017/18/19 using debit card. How do I match the payment with the sales tax due? When I  wanted to  record the payment and add it to SALES TAX account it doesn't allow me to do that and shows : "You have either selected a tax liability account on a transaction where it's not allowed, or haven't specified a tax rate along with it." I definitely picked the liability account, but how else should I do it? Thank you for your help!

Hi, malfurtak.

You can proceed by recording payment through a journal entry. Here’s how:

  1. On the first line, enter the liability account.
  2. Enter the exact amount shown on the bank under Debits.
  3. In the second line, select the bank account where the payment was made.
  4. Enter the same amount under Credits.
  5. Click Save.

You can then match this journal entry to the bank transaction on your banking page. This will deduct your tax liability account and will record the payment in QuickBooks.

It's nice to see you again in the Community, @malfurtak.

I can help figure out why you're receiving this prompt.

This usually happens if you've added it manually through bank feeds. If this is the case, you'll need to create this in the appropriate bank register.

If the same issue persists, I'd suggest contacting our Online Support for further investigation.

Thank you for the reply, however, it doesn't answer my question how to proceed.
