Maine switched the account numbers for all Maine employers to report their state income tax withholding at the end of 2022 (from the federal EIN with two zeros on the end to a new 8 digit account number). As of today, QB still has not updated their software to accept the 8 digit number and keep receiving the error message that it has to be the federal EIN with the two zeros on the end). I can't believe QB has still not updated this after all this time. Does anyone have any suggestions on who or how I can ask for this issue to be addressed.
I see how essential it is for you to update your employee's software to accept 8-digit numbers, @LaurieL. I'm here to share information about the updates of Maine state income tax withholding in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT).
QuickBooks provides payroll updates to QuickBooks Desktop Payroll subscribers. These updates include current and accurate rates and calculations for supported state and federal tax tables, payroll tax forms, and e-file and pay options.
Also, QBDT requires EIN when running reports for withholding taxes. However, the state of Maine uses account numbers with specific digits. As an alternative, you can add zeros when entering the account number.
We've also compiled links for each supported state to find details on tax forms, withholdings, unemployment and other tax, e-file and pay information, general state and agency information, and employer registration. To view the detailed list, check out this link: Access state agency websites for payroll.

I do apply the updates every time and I did apply the latest update this morning but unfortunately did not address this problem.
I wasn't sure what you meant when you wrote "Also, QBDT requires EIN when running reports for withholding taxes. However, the state of Maine uses account numbers with specific digits. As an alternative, you can add zeros when entering the account number". The old way was the EIN with 2 zeros. Are you saying that QB doesn't have the capability and therefore will never update the software to include the new state of Maine's 8 digit number? I have clients that started their payroll in 2023 and the state of ME assigned them new 8 digit numbers, so I have had to file all the 941-ME returns manually and not through QB. Will this ever be fixed or is there a work around so I can e-file the 941-ME through QB with the new 8 digit number? Is there anyway I can override the error message and e-file the returns?
Hello, LaurieL. Let me provide you with insights about e-filing 941 through QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) in Maine.
Please take note that QuickBooks Desktop will depend on the tax table provided by the different tax agencies including Maine. Yes, you can add to your payroll setup an 8-digit number, however, an error will occur when e-filing. Since you can print, I suggest continuing the manual returns for now.
Additionally, I'm adding this article for detailed information about e-filing state forms in QBDT: E-file and e-pay state forms and taxes in QuickBooks Desktop Payroll Enhanced.
