Join nowI have Quickbooks Pro 2019 desktop version. I received the email about it being discontinued in May. I dont want to change to the updated online version. I have a very small company with only 4 employees. I understand that I will be able to still use the program, but will I be able to use my current version to run manual payroll after my enhanced payroll
is cancelled? I do wish a desktop version would still be available, I’ve been using quickbooks for over 20 years.
QB Desktop Payroll only works with a supported QBD version after May 31, 2022 (i.e 2020-2022). You can still purchase the one time license for QBD 2021 if required.
Where would I purchase the 2021 license?

Just got off the phone with sales representative and she said no. The desktop version 2021 is not available for me. That stinks. I am very disappointed and will be looking for something else.

I don't see how you can provide me with a 2021 license if Quickbooks wont sell me one? I went to your website, but it looks like you're in another country. Thanks for trying to help anyway.
I have been attempting the same. We have 2 employees paid monthly. Not worth paying for new software yearly and a payroll subscriptions yearly. We have canceled our payroll and removed the service from our software and are starting manual payroll tomorrow. It doesn't seem to be a problem. We do have to calculate the taxes manually which is odd since when setting up the payroll tax items, we put the percentage and limits into the item information.
Apparently there were some stand alone desktop versions sold but I can't find any (or the ones people are selling are over $1000 now). I will stick with my 2019. I don't need the support for the price they are charging.
Good luck
Contact us in private and we may help to obtain the one time license for QB Desktop 2021 to upgrade your version at much lower rate than $1000 for sure.
I talked to a "contact" person from Intuit 3 times yesterday and received no help. Let me know how to contact you "privately" and I will.
thanks

I am using QB desktop Pro 2020. I also have few employees and can not upgrade to a newer version and would prefer to do payroll manually. I can not access "manual payroll" anymore and am wondering if there are any options for the small business users who can not afford to upgrade to a subscription paid option?
Thanks,
Sandy
Hello there, @yagottaluvlife. I'm here to help you do manual payroll in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT).
To ensure you'll be able to access the Manual Payroll feature, let's verify your user access. From there, ensure that you have permission to do payroll in your QBDT company. Here's how:
If confirmed, may I know if you receive any error messages when attempting to access manual payroll? That information is a great help so I can provide a timely solution.
For reference, please check this article: Set up manual payroll without a subscription in QuickBooks Desktop.
You can also manually enter payroll via journal entry. To make sure you'll account the transactions correctly, I highly recommend reaching out to your accountant. They can provide advise and assist you throughout the process. If you're not affiliated with one, you can use our Find an Accountant tool to look for one near your area.
Please don't hesitate to post again if you have any other concerns managing your payroll in QuickBooks. Have a good one and stay safe.
I did not receive any error messages and I am administrator. I am still not able to switch to manual payroll
Can someone please advise. I have been getting different answers from whom ever I speak with from Quickbooks.
Once the payroll subscription expires on May 31, 2023, will I still be able to do payroll in QBD 2020, just do it manually? meaning calculate taxes, enter information manually and print checks? That is the only question I have and I can not seem to get a straight answer. Thank you!
Sandy
Yes you will be able to do that manually. We dropped our subscription last year. You will no longer get payroll updates so you have to check all of that yourself. I recommend setting everything up as soon as yours expires so you have a few days to make sure you understand how to do it manually.
Here is some information that I was given:
All internet-connected services in QuickBooks Desktop will be removed, including the tax update table, Quickbooks release update, banking, etc.
Moreover, you can still use the manual payroll since this feature isn't included in the product discontinuation. Remember that you'll have to compute and enter payroll taxes and file your tax forms.
Feel free to visit this article for your guide: Set up manual payroll without a subscription in QuickBooks Desktop.
For an additional information, read this page: QuickBooks Desktop service discontinuation policy.
Also, be aware that the links above that QB provided do not let you know that you must remove your payroll service key if you previously had a subscription. Otherwise the manual payroll feature under preferences may be "greyed out". This is the link to do that successfully.
Hope this helps.
Rhonda
I understand you need to swap to manual payroll, @yagottaluvlife. I'll provide the steps for contacting our support team in QuickBooks Desktop Payroll.
I encourage you to call our Desktop payroll support team so they can check further if there's an ongoing issue about switching to manual payroll. And roll out potential remedies for this error encountered.
Please see the steps below:
On the other hand, your product will still work for you after May 31, 2023. QuickBooks Desktop 2020 will discontinue access to add-on services, including all versions of QuickBooks Desktop Pro, Premier, and Enterprise Solutions v20. See this article for a guide: QuickBooks Desktop 2020 service discontinuation policy.
Also, if you need to run payroll transactions, here's a quick review of all your payroll totals: Create a payroll summary report in QuickBooks. The steps are available on this page.

Thank you so much Rhonda...This is a huge help. The link to remove the Payroll Service Key is broken and doesnt provide any information. Might there be another link?
Thank you so much!
Sandy
I am not sure why that isn't working for you. When I click it takes me right there.
See if that one works. If not I will copy and paste the information.
Rhonda
I'm unable to turn on manual payroll also. I'm using QB 2020 and, with this client's company, I previously had a paid payroll subscription but the price is outrageous. I'm wondering if you also had the paid payroll subscription in the past? Could that be the reason I'm blocked & can't select the choice for "manual payroll"?
