if you are taxed as a sole proprietor, you are not allowed to be on payroll, so you do not have a salary.  A sole proprietor takes an equity draw as needed.

 

A client is a customer, you do not pay a salary to your customers

 

If what you are calling a client is an independent contractor, you do not pay salary to independent contractors either, pay them and report at the end of the year the total amount on a 1099-misc
