Join nowI can change the tax rate for unemployment but my 2022 tax wage base shows $28,000 but my Quickbooks shows $26,000. How can I change the wage base or will this be changed automatically with my Quickbooks payroll service?
Solved! Go to Solution.
Glad to see you in the Community, PattiC63.
Let me shed some light on the tax wage base.
QuickBooks Desktop will automatically change the new wage limit once there are updates to stay compliant with your state tax laws and regulations. You'll want to consider tracking the amount deducted for NC Unemployment Insurance for each of your employees if they already reached the limit.
Here's how:
Also, please make sure your QuickBooks Desktop is updated to the latest release and tax table.
Here are the links for the instructions:
To check the state compliance, you can click on the state link in this article: Payroll Tax Compliance Links.
Please feel to reply on this thread if you have additional questions or need help with other payroll task. Take care and stay safe.

Um, your reply did NOT help me. This is kind of ridiculous, and I really don't have time to waste on this --- or to remember in the future.
I have the letter from NC saying limit is increased to $28,000.
The official NC website says the limit is increased to $28,000.
And QB updates do NOT reflect it.
How hard is it for QB to verify and make this change? Why do I instead have to add a new payroll addition, or later spend time making adjustments, instead of having this simple change made --- especially as it has certainly been brought to your attention? Or at the very least --- allow ME to make the adjustment. I mean, y'all trust me to make the tax rate adjustment on my own, but not to make the wage base adjustment? That's just poor performance. This is irritating and time consuming and just plain dumb.
Did you ever find a solution to this? I'm also NC employer....
RenjolynC,
Intuit has not resolved this. Can you give us a timeframe when you expect the update will be pushed out to change the NC unemployment wage base for 2022?
Thanks!
Thanks for following this thread, @cheryljo.
At the moment, we don't have a specific timeframe as to when will this be available. We will get back to this thread when we receive updates.

NC withholding tax tables have not been updated either. According to the info I have the latest update 22201. There's no state updates for NC.
So we just need to wait for a new update in payroll for the Wage Base change? Why isn't it done at the beginning of the year?
Greeting, Leighanne.
Allow me share some additional information about the wage base change.
Yes, we need to wait for the new update since the state agency updates about the wage change every year.
When an update is available, a pop-up will appear automatically. You can manually update your tax table if you missed it.

Ok - once again Intuit cannot get this right - as previously stated, the wage base had been updated for several months to 28K - I agree we do not have time to monitor this manually - that is actually a ridiculous statement. I have several payroll where this will reached in the first 5 or 6 weeks of the year. Seems pretty simple to do. Once again we pay a lot of money for this product and are constantly asked to do more on the user end, does not seem like a company that actually cares about their customers - but since we don't have a lot options I guess that's what Intuit will continue to do.
I spent 20-30 minutes with a tech who was very sure that my updates weren't in fact updating only to finally figure out that this hasn't been included in the update. This after receiving instruction from my post to contact support.
1. I don't have time for this either
2. Your tech should be made aware of this issue so we aren't wasting time on this
3. This seems to be an ongoing issue (at least I see annual posts on it)
4. Make all of our lives easier and just make it a manual field that the user can change.
The same thing happened last year too. I have set a task to keep getting payroll updates and checking to see if it has been updated. It was still incorrect as of 2 days ago. As was mentioned, the new max has been known for a while. They are charging a ridiculous $500 a year for payroll updates. It should have shown up on Jan 1. If they can't do their job, then at least let us edit it ourselves. We have to go in and put in our rate in anyway. It would take 2 seconds to update that at the same time.
This is one of the many reasons I hate Quickbooks. Unfortunately, they have cornered the market.
As of today, 1/26/22, the SUTA wage base for NC still has not been updated! When will this be updated?
Hi there, Kbatts1968.
As of now, the Payroll Update 22202 (January 13, 2022) for North Carolina only includes new withholding tables. As for the new state unemployment rate for NC, there's no update yet coming from the state agency. Here's an article you can refer to for more details about the latest payroll news and updates.
For now, we can adjust the new state unemployment rate in QuickBooks to keep your payroll records accurate. Here's how:
5. In the Item Name column, choose the State Unemployment Insurance. Then, complete the Taxes and Liabilities fields.
6. Select Accounts Affected and then OK.
Then, repeat if you need to adjust employees, and select OK. Here's an article you can refer to for more details about adjusting payroll liabilities in the software. Once the new rate is included in the latest payroll updates, just follow the steps in this article to update your State Unemployment Insurance rate: Update your State Unemployment Insurance (SUI) rate in QuickBooks or Intuit Payroll.

@RCV This is not the issue. The issue is in the WAGE BASE in SUI, not the tax rate. Please fix the WAGE BASE. EVERY NC payroll client Intuit has using Quickbooks desktop is at Intuit's mercy until you change it. As of today, Intuit is almost a month late in getting this updated for their clients. The wage base was published almost two months ago.
Hi there, astewart.
Allow me to share additional information on our latest payroll updates including the Taxable wage base.
I've checked our last payroll update, and it appears we haven't updated the rates and limits yet. Once updated, QuickBooks will automatically pro-rate based on payrolls that have been running already this year, so you won't need to worry about manually changing any information.
I recommend checking out our latest payroll news and updates for updated information on what we release in each payroll update.

You're more than welcome to visit this thread again if you have other questions. Just add the details of your concern here and I'll help you out.
Honestly, this whole thing could be avoided by simply giving the user the ability to change this at the same time that we change our unemployment rates. As another user noted, every NC QB user is at your mercy to make a change that they are already aware of. If you require official notification of the wage base it can be found here:
