payroll - employee setup

My client had an employee complete the W4 form as Head of Household with 0 exemptions.  QuickBooks does not have HH as a choice.  Only Single, Married, Married but withhold at higher rate, or Don't Withhold.  What should she choose for this employee?

For the 2020 W4 QB does in fact offer Head of Household. Possibly you have not updated to the newest tax tables, which is version 22010. To check your update version go to Employee>Get Payroll Updates and if your version os a lower number select Update Now. Close and reopen QB and you should have in employee tax section the option to use 2020 W4 and that will give you the HOH option to check

Thank you for your response.  The payroll update was done and no, this did not resolve the issue.

payroll - employee setup

Hello @ThereseGardner,

Let's continue our troubleshooting steps by making sure that we've already installed the latest version of QuickBooks. Since the latest employee withholding set up as the head of household requires the following:

  • Latest QuickBooks Desktop version
  • Latest payroll tax table
  • Latest W4 form

On that same page, here's how you can update QuickBooks:

  1. Go to Help.
  2. Select Update QuickBooks Desktop.
  3. Under Overview, select Update Now.
  4. Click Get Updates.

In addition, here's an article you can read to learn more about how you can update and install the latest release: Update QuickBooks Desktop to the latest release.

Lastly, I've got this helpful article in case you need some ideas about how to handle errors upon installing the updates: How do I?
