QBO category tied to 1099

We are in California and used contractors up until the law changed in 2019. They are all now employees. We don't use the "Contractor" category anymore and I would like to make it inactive. When I try it gives me an error "You cannot delete an account that is associated with a Form 1099 box." How do I disassociate it? Just trying to clean up our chart of accounts.

Help has arrtived, angeladare. I'm here to ensure you're able to make the category inactive.

The sync error you've encountered prevents deleting the account associated with Form 1099. Let's remove it from the box to fix this. I'll show you how.

  1. Go to Expenses and then select the Vendors tab.
  2. Choose Prepare 1099s, then click Continue your 1099s.
  3. Navigate to the Accounts page.
  4. Locate the specific account.
  5. Update the account or uncheck the box(es) that are required for tracking.
  6. Click Save and Finish Later to close the window.

Once done, you can now make the category inactive.

When you run reports, you can still see the inactive accounts. This keeps everything accurate. I'd suggest customizing the reports to hide them, but this may affect accuracy.

Please come back and keep us posted on your progress in getting this error message resolved. It's my priority to make your books accurate.
